Tips from the elders...

Ok, there's been numerous Cheese 'n' Whine parties gone on these boards concerning the inability for new players to grasp the basics of their class, so in the vein of those "Worst/Best moments" threads, how about everyone posts one, maybe two tips for our new friends reading this board and thinking we're all hostile and ewul...

If i may start with Clerics/Healers of all kinds:

When your healing for a group, to target group members easily, without keep targetting the mob in the mass of fighting, use the mini-group list to select your targets from - just click on the name of the suffering group member

sounds silly, i know, but it took me til 10th as Dil to realise this ;)

Use shift+F1-F8 to target group members even faster. ;)

Unless of course they are a necromancer, and then you have to try and pick out their pet in the middle of melee. :(

Next step:
Ice Wizard
PBAE damage spreads agro evenly throughout the group members. So waiting until ALL the mobs have been succesfully taunted onto the group's tanks before you start nuking away. Also remember that damage is distance dependant, so stand on top of the mob to maximise it.

Run away as fast as you can. Only join a fight when the 3 tanks you are hunting with have reduced your opponent to about 10% health, and then, go cautiously

Also the big group window lags substantially - always use the mini window to gauge when people are being hit and therefore need healing.

Defenisive tanks
Use Guard, Protect and Intercept.
I won't go into their details here - there are many sites that details what they do and how to use them.
When grouped always use your taunt weapon style on the mob - you should be taking aggro and getting hit, thats your job.
Knowing what these are and how to use them make the difference between a good and a bad tank :)

You actually have to be stealthed to use Backstab and Perforate Artery.

(You'll be amazed how many infils have complained to me they couldn't get PA to work when in plain view.)

when in a group with melee dmgdealers ue the following setup for best group benefit

put your chants in this order on the quickbar

[AF] [DMG] [END] [HEAL]

when twisting having end where it is your group won´t run out of endurance, and you won´t run out of power, (you will however runout of end very fast, until you have 42 in chants)

------

Clerics

IF you have to use a groupheal use the spreadheal (when you are of a sufficient level) it works MUCH better than the standard group heal

------

all tanks

avoid having your back to the mobs as this will render blocking and parrying useless, it will also cause the mobs to hit you for slightly more dmg (in my experience)

DETAUNT

Detaunt moves can be a tanks best friend. If you are taking a massive beating, detaunt the mob so another tank can take the aggro.

Last Ditch attempts
If a mob is nearly dead but so is a char who is engaged in combat, run in with you stick or mace (wizzy or cleric). The mob will likely aggro you quickly and providing you can take 2-3 hits you will probably save the tanks life.

Acuity buffs only work on cloth casters, not on yourself or paladins (yes, when playing my Wizard, a pally in the group got an INT buff while I got none).

To Budding Thanes:

RvR: Save your Insta DD for a cloth caster in mid cast, dont waste it on a tank. Its your most valuable tool against nukers and really pisses them off :D

When engaging a class likely to have Blade-turn dont try slam outright, swing ur weapon to break Blade-Turn before you slam.

As a Thane you will soon have a chain castable DD at 1500 range, stay close to you most vital and vulnerable class, eg Supp RM, Healer, Shaman and stick Guard on them. You can now deal damage from range, protect your healer/runie and dish damage in melee to anyonw who attacks your healer/runie from close combat.

Use your AE spells with great care, they can lose us battles if used badly. Try not to brek Mezz with AE, however if your group is using AE Stun/AE Nuke tactics, go wild.

YOU ARE NOT A HEAVY TANK regardless of what people say. You cannot sustain damage for long, you do NOT belong in the front line, your skills are best utilised as a Ranged Guardian aka nuke and guard, melee when needed.

TIP: If you do not wish to gain a reputation as a selfish or thoughtless individual don't disband or log as soon as you have levelled. Have a care to the group you are with.

If you get aggroed and quickcast mez, make sure to turn your pet onto passive, nothing worse than pet swinging and breaking mez immediatly after casting it.

Insta amnesia ( or lul for the pro's) is your friend in rvr as well as pve

Is your chanter or druid (or yourself) taking a beating, lul the fucker. This clears the aggrolist on the mob and the first player that generates aggro will get it. THIS INCLUDES HEALING so don't lul and heal or you're ... well fucked

Druids:

Insta Group heal get's you all aggrom from all mobs in group so warn everyone you going to use. Also do not heal everyone just when they get hurt, wait whe nthey go about 70% health and start healing as you can be sure tank/whatever got aggro.

(You cant belive how many druid was asking why they get all aggro after using insta heal:rolleyes: )

Healing Classes:

Wait till the tank is really in need of a heal, then use your biggest heal as often as possible. Give tanks Acuity buffs as they are stupid and need all the help they can get. Never give tanks endurance regen, they're tanks fgs, they should be able to run forever without getting tired. Give Str buffs to mages, they are weak and need Str buffs to carry all their loot.

CC'rs:

Spam your mezz/stun. You never know if it stuck or not. Can't be too safe. Always start with your AE insta mezz/stun if you have it, show those mobs you mean business and that your glance/glare is uber. If something is mezzed, root it for good messure.

Tanks:

Go 2 handed. D00d you are uber. Deal that damage. Spec in Thrown/ranged, show your friends how awesome you look throwing axes/hammers at mobs. If mages wanted guarding then they should have spec'd shield. Gimps. Never intercept, FGS, you might die, and that's no use to anyone, especially you. Always use detaunt, there'll be someone else to taunt. You are a tank, you are ALWAYS the last one to die.

Mages:

If you have root, use AE straight off, then impress your tanks with your uber AE spells with pretty gfx. Then AE again. If a mob goes for you, run around in a circle around the tanks, they have limitless endurance and can chase it down easy.

Archers:

Stand right at the front and shoot any mob you see sleeping, fgs, it's a fight, how rude of them to sleep.

Assassins:

DoT and PA any mob you can, straight off. You're more uber than tanks, so take that aggro, you da man. Besides, they have 2-H weapons and you can evade like a rabbit on 'roids.

That should cover most things.

Healing... always use small heals when possible, it's more efficient and pulls less agro.

If you right-click on the group/friend/conc/pet tabs, among others, they can be made partially transparent. Only mentioning it because most screenshots I've seen don't use this and there's no reason not to use it. At 50% the tabs are still visible as is the area behind them.

Champions

I this is for Large Weapon Champions mainly

When doing Player vs. Monster (PvE) you'll need all the nd you can get for your styles. As your DD/Debuffs/and Speeddecrese spells all use up your end use them with a little care. What you want is for the monster to loss hitpoints and attack slower, along wiht some pure pain.

To cast the speeddecresing pull spell you do nothing but wast power, save taht one for some chessy healer trying to out run you in the frontier. And then give him (her) a good wack in the back.

The debuff dex/quick is usefull to make a caster caster slower or make some one evade and parry less ... thats nice on paper. Usable in PvE ? Not realy save the end and cast it in RvR on a caster incase you want to use it.

Now this leaves us with DD and str/con debuff and attackspeeddecress, the most usable spells in PvE and also good in RvR (I love it when a caster finds himself encumbered because his str went *puff*). Now you normaly pull from far away and to this you use DD, and then you debuffs the bastard. But if you can try and pull with the Con/str debuffs and start the fight with him at lower hits and then DD him, might just take the extra 20hits away from him that you need.

__________________________________

Something else mostly too hibi casters, I'v tried this a few times. When your in a group and your pulling high level monsters. Why not use a root to make the monsters stick in place and then take them on one by one, focus all the manpower on one monster at a time. This way one take down one mob fast, insted of having 3 tanks on 3 diffrent monsters making the druid and bards work over time to keep up in healing. This might not be as fun since you wont have a change to use your BOOM BOOM!.

I know most of the time its not a problem with a well balanced group, but there are times where the balance of the groups is a little off and where each tank on each mobs dosent work all too well.

Give it a thought.

Pet counts as a grp in it self, so when useing it to pulll with u will have all mobs jumping pet and therefore have all the mobs in a fixed spot. Great for ur healer to cast AE stun and then do ur pbae

Pets!

Pets and their masters chapter one ....

Okay you can make hotkeys for all the little petcommands by press ing shift and then the command you want and place it in your hotbar for easy control.

Chapter 2
Pets counts towards the total numbers of people in a group, remember that.

Chapter 3 ... eh whats chapter 3 again ?

Darkness Falls

Its alwasy good to help others in need, but you have to know the risk. For some reason when you help some one in DF, then for every time you helped someone you seem to get an extra add yourselve. So a good way to keep helping all those little once at the entrance from beein killed by the biggy monster, is that once you helped out you go and find a grey con mob and give it a wack. Why ? because its easyer to kill of 6 greys then 6 purples thats why.

What Gromnir is referring to, is more commonly called the "BAF code", or "Bring a Friend code".

The way it works, is that anyone that hits a creature that you fight, results in the size of their group, being added to yours. E.g.:

1 Person fighting, gets helped by 1 other = Next pull counts as 2 people.

1 Person fighting and his creature gets hit by 1 person, but that person is grouped with 4 others = Next pull counts as 6 people...bad news for the 1 person. This effects both groups. However, this only works for social animals, so just find a creature that never BAFs and kill it.

1-2 people = 1 creature.
3-4 people = 2 creatures.
5-6 people = 3 creatures.
7+ = 3+

Correct if wrong.

Pets don't take XP if they don't attack.

I'm sick of watching people argue because some Cabalist is being asked to drop his pet or leave the group

Shield Tanks (all realms)

When in a group with more than 1 shield-specced tank put guard on each other and check who has got protect on who. Make 100% certain that the group's healer/s have protect on them. Then casters. If fighting mobs that take your primary caster down in 1 hit then someone needs to have intercept on that caster.

Here's what the shield skill icons look like (from left to right Protect, Guard, Intercept):
