Tips and recommendations: Laptop

So I started to look around for a new PC, thought it might be more flexible getting a laptop. So I want some tips/recommendations...

I'll use it mostly for games (WoW and soon WAR) and programs like CAD and Sony Vegas.

So..

Mac or PC?
What manufacturer?
Vista or XP?
Etc...

With the Mac or PC option, I'd just go with what your used to..changing to either one from being on the other is usually quite painful and you'll find yourself going "Well where the hell has that gone" for 5minutes stressing then suddenly "Oooh it's over there, WELL WHY THE HELL ISN'T IT WHERE I WANT IT AAAARRRGGGHHH" etc.

I just spent £509 on a 1.83 dual core with 2gb of ram 256 dedicated gfx with 256 turbo cache for 512 total Nvidia. Also has all the normal 120gb harddisk lite scribe dvd cd rom card reader and wifi. Was £509 ex display £699 it started at. £190 off and there was nothing wrong with it at all. Only downside is its a Acer and i have not heard great things about them if they go wrong but i spend £60 on a 2 year 4 hour care pack so im not to worried.

So my top tip is hit the shops and check out ex display gear if you find a scratch but you think you can live with it use it to get even more money off

And also i think these Mac adverts will just cause some serious hackers to go after Macs and when they do from what i have read alot of people are worried the mac will not be able to handle a seeious attack.

depends on money the dell gaming laptops are good, so are the horrible expensive alienware ones..

MAC OS is a differant flavour of BSD UNIX so think it will have no more problems than usually for UNIX, just remember to PATCH!

Problem with Dell is the majority of the componants used are out of date, so if they go wrong you are screwed...

And since they took over alienware they have stopped using the top componants and begun to use more generic ones. In short they worthless compared to the old days

My brother recently bought a Dell laptop and it seems to work really good. The dilemma is that I want as good as possible as I don't want to buy a new after 1 year, but at the same time I won't pay more than £900 or something. So the best around £700 price would be?

I have a Dell XPS and love it. Great laptop and capable of easily playing any games I've chucked on it. Duel log DAOC - no problem.

Yes but no Other Unix OS is basing its adverts on the Buy our OS we don't get virus like PC's line. It will not take too much for some one to actually start caring about Macs and go after them

They work good until you have a problem, then you are screwed. Either their customer service screws you around or you cant get the part required.

A family friend purchased a £3k PC. He a computer engineer so why he purchased I dont know. Something went wrong and he knew what it was, he spoke to them and told them the problem and asked if they be willing to send him the part. They said No and that they had to take it in theirself.

Fine, can live with that.

Then problems started. Week goes by after them taking it. Phone up to get an update. "We cant find whats wrong with it".

They get told what the problem part is.

"Oh right, think you may have it there."

So they go away, another week passes and still nothing from them. Phone again.

"Oh we still not fixed it yet"

They get told to get it fixed and back within 2 days. So the next day he returns home from work and their is a delivery on his door step, been sitting there all day. No note or anything with it, so assumes it working. So he takes it out and sets it up, and they hadnt even bothered to repair it. :worthy:

Kind of off putting when you get many stories about them.

Mind you they aint all bad, 3 years ago my cousin purchased a £900 laptop from them, he still has not been charged for it

So I visited the local MAC store and I definately like the MAC design more, and the sexy shop assistant too!

But it seems like I'm leaning towards a Dell, still plenty of time to change my mind, maybe I should check the Mac store again to get some more info! *cough*

lol @ Maddox, but he is right. Mac users are the most clueless computers users there are. Maybe Kivik deserves to be part of the mac crowd just for preferring the design.

Seriously, don't buy a fucking mac they are shitter than shit itself, but if u want to buy a pc cos its pretty then look for a pretty IBM compatible cos it sure as hell won't be as shit as a mac.

Ok so you buy a brand new mac lappy and install xp on it, something goes wrong, who will support it? Apple afaik don't support anything other than mac os on mac's. Micorosoft I would imagine will only support their os on the platform for which they were designed which is IBM compatible hardware not mac hardware.

Hm thought of doing what Varna said but didn't really think about the support, on the other hand a family friend is a computer engineer and has solved most problems we've had. But anyways, leaning towards a XPS as I mentioned. Maybe I can get it through my dads company abit cheaper, thanks alot for the inputs and such!

And I wonder what's worst, MAC users that can't shut the fuck up about how much better MAC is, or people who can't shut the fuck up about MAC users that can't shut the fuck up.
