Ti4400 hates me CS :(

I seem to have nothing but bother..and could do with a little advice.

The reason I am posting on this forum is because it ...erm...stops CS working.

Ok here goes....I just fitted a gainward ti4400 golden badboy to a via kt133 mobo with a 1.1 tbird...I reinstalled the latest detonator drivers and the performance on all my games is now completely j.arthur.rank

My frame rate on CS now falls to bellow 40 insome places and jedi knight has also been badly affected...I've also taken a performance hit on NWN. This is not to mention the fact that the visuals are blatantly worse....i.e. a lot more jaggy.

TBH honest...upgrading from an early GF2 gts I expected about twice the performance I was getting before. I'm reluctant to change my processor as it wont benefit me much unless I'm using higher resolutions (1600) which I dont use anyway.

Could some gfx card guru out there please help me ... pretty please :)

The most common cause is running in software mode, worth checking that you are running your games in GL just in case.

lol...definitely using openGL.

CPU and System temp is fine although I'm getting some crashing.

Have just read that disabling fastwrites and sideband addressing and also changing to AGP 2X may help but aint tried that yet.

I really am getting hacked off with the whole affair

Throddy..what mobo/processor you using at the mo??

Try some older, more stable detonators? Are you using the latest official ones or the beta ones?

Latest official..

I've been told to try 27.xx and older 4in1s as Iam still using win98se

I have xp2.0+ with Asus A7V333 mobo. In fairness thats how the pc came when I bought it, so I would expect it to work properly :)

Do you think it may be due to the fact I have a 250W PSU?

I think I may need a 350 or 450 ... not sure though.

I am on the verge of comitting geforceicide.

got vsynch off? if not turn it off :)

^^^^^ the only thing worth knowing imho wrt to HL performance anyway.

vsync was off :).

I did a timedemo on Q3 on demo001 yesterday.....85 fps at 1024 and max visuals...that seems a bit shite considering meh gf2 got that.

I'm scuffing my feet along the carpet as we speak trying to build up some static ;)...then i'm gonna touch the bastard :D

I think your last comment helps me shed some light on this Leg. Rarely, if ever , will a new video card actually improve the speed of your games. The processor , if you like, "pushes along" the speed of the game, the video card puts it on the screen. Thats a cery simplified way of putting it, and my apologies to all at technation for that , but roughly speaking thats the case.
For example, a pc I used to have was a 400 celeron (wooo!) with a std vga graphics card. It would play Q2 ok, but in software mode. I fitted a Voodoo 3 2000, and omg the improvement! In speed and obviously openGL. A year later, following the same reasoning as yours, I fitted a Voodoo 5.5. The performance difference ? None. It would play the same speed at a higher resolution, but no increase in speed. You see, the processor was already going as fast as it could.
As far as the comment about turning off vsynch, dont do that, its an old Quake idea and will cause distortions for CS. Your game wont go over 60fps because of the vsych, simply increase the refresh rate to whatever your monitor will allow.
Personally I play CS at 60fps, my refresh rate, and I have an all singing all dancing PC :)

The reason I posted this is because of an article in PCG last month showd a benchmark (in FPS) for different geforce cards playing RTCW. It showed a 2 fold increase in perfomance in 1024 from a gf2 to a ti4400 using a 1GHz athlon (i.e. 50 to 100).

I decided to upgrade as I was having some big frame rate drops on a few games....I am yet to see this performance difference though.

And do you get a steady 60fps throughout?....even if I set CS to 60 fps...I still get a big drop on some maps during a medium scale fight....which in my opinion is complete horse shit.....although playable. (just not £230 playable)

M8 I think you would get a performance drop sometimes. I never, ever vary from 60 fps @ 1024-768, with hi-poly models and everything, which is why i do it. But thats my processor as well as my vid card doing that.
My last pc was a 1gig p3 with a gf3, and i used to play that at 800-600 to be sure it never ever dropped below 60fps.
You'll always get people saying "i run at 100fps- constant" but when you pull them on it they start wriggling :) In the middle of a firefight most pc's are going to loose a few fps. I tell em what I have got and they say well err erm lol.
My q3 demo btw is 200 fps at 1074-768. But thats the processor as much as the vid card. The old p3 made 115 fps . My config has bullect eject off, no smoke trails and a few other things to speed stuff up btw.
Oh, and check you have anti-aliasing turned off, that could cause some performance drop I reckon .
That article seems to be talking about RTCW. That is a very pretty game, I could see where a gf3 would be better than a GF2 for that. In fact my old P3 had a gf2 in it before the GF3, and it did make a difference to RtCW, but it didnt improve the speed of q3 at all, only in that before i used to run 800-600, and after i ran 1024-768.

I bought a 64Mb DDR GF2 Ti a while back and found that using the latest Detonators caused my PC to lock up, so i used the older ones and that solved the problem. I also had to upgarde to the latest 4in1s, as with the old ones my card would only run in AGP 2X mode. Hope this helps.
