Thou shalt not speak of this

Things you cannot talk about (at least not for very long) in this forum, going by thread-lockage and post-deletage.

Feel free to add you own. It's a fun game, that anyone can play(ok, it's not fun, but you're all bloody bored anyway:))

Let's get started:

Software (illegal or strangely otherwise on occasions).
Racism.
Sexism.
*ism.
Tilda.
Wang.
(Rather strangely) the evolution of the English language.

why cant you talk about racism, sexism for instance?

its just retarded, and I doubt that mods will close/delete threads that _talks_ about those issues. Its a totally different ballpark to make a thread where you say : I hate every n1gger, spick, jew etc etc etc etc in the world. (thats just begging for it)

It's a social wassname, one of those things you can't talk about because it makes people uncomfortable because they're scared of finding that they act with prejudice or something...

Which I agree is just stupid.

Discussions of such issues are not a bad thing per se but unfortunately there is a minority element that would use it to express their own extreme views, leading to lots of angry forum users who report threads like this one and who complain to the GAME higher powers about the content of these forums.

Then perhaps Wang can be discussed, providing that Wang in question is suitable for discussion.

Did someone really report this thread?

That's just downright strange
(and yes that was just an excuse to use the "eek" emote)

/edit typo

There are lots of places where you can talk about whatever you want on the internet. However this is a game forum and even though this section is marked as off topic it doesn't mean it isn't a part of the overall dark age forums.

If you want to discuss stuff make your own forums or go to the proper places.

are we allowed to speak about DAoC things in OT or will they get locked/moved?

I'm not particullarly interested in discussing most of the things on the list, I just thought it would be good to sit down and work out what we should stop making threads about, since it's not always easy to predict how something will be received especially if you're new to the forums.

yeah, all those kinda threads turn into flamefests and personal crusades anyways. and they seldom really solve or conclude anything (except hatred and such ofc).

This thread isn't really about Argueing that we should be able to discuss these things, it's about working out what we can discuss.

The fact that the forum falls within the DAoC forums does not determine it's content. If the content has anything to do with DAoC it ussually falls into the other DAoC forums. This forum is for discussing non-DAoC topics (such as cats) with people who play DAoC (such as poor Salty). You'll note cats have nothing to do with DAoC yet the topic does belong in the Excalibur OT forum.

We have guidlines for content, but these are always hard to follow when the range of possible content is so wide. So why not have a list of things that people often end up talking about, but is not permitted here. It would save some thread locking at the least.

I saw we gain legislation that takes away Ziva's authority from Excal OT because she hasn't a clue of the mood of this forum. Perhaps before she goes in gun-ho and moderates furiously she should make the effort to find out about the people here and what they say. If she did, she would find that nothing is serious.

I'm sorry, but this is drivel. I'm tired of people saying that the mods FORBID discussion.

Software - These are GAME forums. Run by GAME, a shop that sells GAMES. It supports the GAMING industry. Therefore, you are a total tool if you think the mods are going to dance naked around the christmas tree with glee if you start hosting links or advice on how to chip your console, where to download pirate games, how to sell ingame property when that Game's COC expressly forbids it.

Racism - No problems at all with discussing issues surrounding racism. However, what we ended up with last time was a rather nasty core of people going on about how much they "fucking hate pakis" and horrific other racist banter. Talk of how they should be "shot on the beaches". Some people still can't get it through their thick skulls that there is a marked difference between discussing the issue of immigration policy, and raving about how you fucking hate coons because they are scum. I'm personally SICK of people saying that we won't let you discuss racism - we will. We just won't tolerate people acting like racist pricks. There.

Edit:// And if the mods now try to avoid such discussions, it's purely on the basis of events that happened in these forums such as the ones I mentioned.

Sexism - of course it can be discussed, but just don't be sexist. The same as racism can be discussed, but don't be racist.

Alkoron, this isn't aimed specifically at you, but there have been a few people bleating on about how the mods forbid conversation and it's just not true.

tbh i dont personally think saying illegal immigrants should be shot on the beaches they try to get in on is actually racist. its a tad extreme, and obviously not serious, but its not in any way having a go at the persons race, its having a go at the fact the person is 'illegally' trying to invade our country.

The whole nature of everything posted in those threads was incredibly extreme, turning the forums into a mini NF rally.

it was extreme yea, but i dont personally think anyone was extremely offended by it. if you dont wanna partake in the discussion then dont, simple as that imho. although i do understand your position as a mod and kinda having to stop that kinda stuff, which is fair do's, its your job. i'd just like to see a mod-free board somewhere where 'anything' goes, i reckon it'd rock.

let me start off with saying that the daoc moderators are/have been very/extremely lenient most of the time, there have been some more or less seemingly random bannings/closings, but its all in good fun (more or less)
They are an overall great bunch, and they are on average(some up, some down) the nicest mods i've posted under.

That said, I just wanna know why its ok to discuss sexism/racism and not to be sexist/racist?

Im neither, but I still feel that ppl who are should be allowed to share(just that) their view in an orderly fashion. Not the Karam way with "all bitches should blow me and make me dinner and shouldnt be allowed to be bosses or whatever"

And even though ziva says that these are DAOC forums and use that as a reason to close/ban everything they feel dont fit in here, I still feel we should be allowed to talk about whatever really in ot. After all it is OFF topic (anything but daoc imo)
Free speech and all you know...

Free speech is all very well, but these aren't your forums. These forums represent GAME. These forums represent ALL the people who post here, who are affiliated here. As I've said before, I have no problem with the BNP having a voice, but if they started using my lounge to hold rallies I'd have issue with it. The same applies here. You still have freedom of speech, it's not as if we're some oppressive mass of totalitarianism, spilling out into the free world and gagging everyone. If people want to start a website extolling the virtues of aparthied, then they can get their own website. It needs to be noted though that there are laws governing what can and can't be posted online, and inciting racial hatred is one thing that is outlawed. If you look at the BNP site, even they avoid any racist patter.

Mods do not forbid discussion, but they do lock threads consistantly of certain subjects. This is in most cases necessary, due to the hosts resposibility regarding the content of these forums.

I think that stating which subjects should not be discussed would help consistancy and stop people getting anoyed when their conversations are abruptly terminated.

I would also ask that you try to avoid being so "unpleasant" with your posts regarding Excal OT please Damini it is becoming rather offensive.

That's amazing, a thread that stayed serious for more than a whole page, and three mods have posted. I'm astounded; however, I can't be bothered to read it.
