This X-Box Thing Then

Ta TDC,

K, I think what TDC is trying to say is that the early games for the PS1 were mank, and it took a couple of years for them to develop to the full potential of the PS1, not by comparison to the latest and greatest PC's. Id like to see the latest playstation games run on the PC hardware that was out when the PS1 was originally launched.

I just think that overall, the X-Box promises to be the first machine that actually addresses the needs of the masses, instead of trying to dictate to the masses what their needs are, and as a result I imagine it will be incredibly successful.

Address the needs of the masses? What crap are you talking. Generally the public doesn't care what a console can do, or what it's specs are, they care about the games that appeal to them. You appear to be confusing spods, like yourself, and the general public

X-box has two main problems.

1) Launch date - Spring 2002 is still a long way away. It gives PS2 a long time to completely corner the market, and time for someone to buy a Dreamcast so Sega can effectively double their amount of machines sold :). I also cant see Sony giving up precious market share to MS without a fight.

2) It looks like a 3DO. No seriously.

X-box has generated a lot of hype among the PC gaming fraternity, but among console owners....I think theyre still too busy digging into PS2 for daring not to have many decent launch games.

Time shall tell

P.S Stu I dont necessarily have a hard on for ATi atm, or I would be bigging up the Gamecube. I'm a 3dfx fan at heart, but in the past 6 months ATi have had a tad more to offer than 3dfx, without me having to resort to buying smelly nVIDIA stuff.

There's a huge advertising budget behind the XBox though. As long as they pitch the adverts at the right level and often enough the XBox becomes a near-cert for success.

Which console has been most successful recently ? The PS.

Which had the most marketing muscle behind it ? You guess :)

Hmmm, maybe if you would read my posts before mouthing off unnecessarily. Earlier on I stated that I thought the specs would seem skimpy when its released given the current pace of pc development, and that this would be the reason why HARDCORE GAMERS would probably not buy the ffing thing. Tell me where I stated that joe public gave a shit about specs eh?

My point concerning the masses was that atm people have a few choices in terms of what to buy. They can fork out a fortune for a PC, buy a dedicated games console, or buy one of those set top boxes for email/internet. Problem is, most joe bloggs users, will use less than 5% of the capability of the PC but might still feel that some email/wp might be useful. The STB gives the email, but they are not user friendly and dont have the WP, here in ireland at least they have been a disaster, cant give them away. My feeling therefore, is that if the XBox can be an excellent games machine, while provding a stripped down version of windows with email/wp, that it would be best of both worlds for the average user. I dont think thats an unreasonable point of view.

Finally concerning spods, Im not sure what this means, but if its a derogatory term, Im sure its equally applicable to yourself.

spring 2002 now that is a joke, somebody did say something like "if the spec stays the same the games developers can fully exploit the whole of the games console power" ROFLOL . Have we,you or i any idea how powerful a pc will be in 18 months, the x-box will be well out of it. going of thread a bit just to show that the PC is best. now the last upgrade of my machine took about 6 months or more of thought , mobo & cpu, so why so long, well now i have loads of upgrade paths. i am now in a position were by spending say £200 on hardware every 3 or 4 months my machine should be only 30% off of top spec gaming at any time, i hope.

I think that we can reasonably expect to have hit the 1.6 GHz mark by spring 2002. And you can be sure that the ram average will be up around 256 with 512 at least for top PCs. I mean, there's nothing like progress, is there?
If the Xbox is trying to be top of the pile now, it's going to be bottom by the time it comes out. A perfect example to this phenomenon is Daikatana. Disagree with me if you like, but there was a game that came a LITTLE late for its quality peers.

Which is the point I am trying to make ie hardcore gamers who actually care about mhz and ghz and ddr and rdram and mflops and mpixels etc wont want to buy one. But Jonny public, who doesnt care about the specs will just want to see what the games are like. Plus, while I have earlier said that the specs do seem a little skimpy, it has to be pointed out that 1.6ghz with windoze me or 2k, might not be 2x a 733mhz cpu with architecture tweaks and a pared down micro operating system.

And finally, while 1.6 mhz will undoubtedly be available, if you read any of the analysts reports for 2000 on Intel or AMD, most of them say that they BOTH made big mistakes in pushing each other to the mhz levels they did this year. Why? Because there is absolutely no software out there for which it makes a difference at the consumer level. I know you can run q3 at normal settings at 640x480 at 248 fps or summat with a p4, but beyond 125 fps who gives a fiddlers. Videocards is where its at atm lads, and this will be the key to XBox.

I've just seen the X-box controller. I'm sticking with my PS2 thanks.

Horrible controllers put me off N64 and Dreamcast. All of them too bulky and didn't "feel" right after PlayStations'.

Ill give the X-box 2 weeks after its launch, people will buy them in thousands, connect em to the net and they'll get wankered by the latest greatest virus.

The outcome? Dad wont let little Tommy plug it in to the telly in case that breaks too, Mum wont let Tommys nine year old sister play her Toy Story 2 DVD and Mum wont risk her new Riverdance CD in case of the dreaded infection.

X-box ends up understairs/attic/shed/etc........

Are any of these "latest and greatest" consoles going to be upgradeable to make them "future-proof" for a little while atleast ??

Bod: PSX controller was uncomfortable imo. I'll stick with my Saturn pads :)

the PSX controller was just a SNES pad extenstion, people copy the idea Nintendo did from the N64. I would really like to see the GameCube do well as I aint to keen on the x-box, even though it will be a decent console.

X-Box-My Limited Humble Opinion

I had an N64, I only bought it for one game which was Streetfighter II.
(I bought a Snes too but only for my kid...Honest!)
Now i'm a die hard Mac person and have been for years but i'm still
gonna buy the X-Box - but for only one reason and that's Halo.
If Halo came out on a console consisting of two cardboard boxes linked by string - I'd still buy it.
(OK, OK sad gamer - getalife - I know ...but at least you know where this opinion is coming from)
IMO there's no comparison to be drawn with other consoles because they don't have Halo.
For anyone interested in other games that may also be on PS2 or Nintendo Cube
there is a hardware comparison at http://www.dailyradar.com/xboxmag/newissue2/oxm/vstheworld.html
What I do with the X-Box once Halo is released for the Mac will depend on how
MS controls the game servers. Will they allow Mac/PC users to sully their pristine Halo world
with differing levels of hardware (which should knock spots of X-Box users).
Will they even let you connect with slower speed modems as it's hinted
that the X-Box only has broadband?
In a perfect world i'll be able to scrap the X-Box, move back to Mac, still have Halo
and then go back online and kick X-Box ass on their own MS servers......aaaaahhhhh...BLISS!

PS Quorthorn the X-Box dont do email or surfin

Seen the promo stuff for Halo. Didnt think much of it. Knew I shouldnt have watched it right after the Unreal Technology Demo. I'll stick to Tekken, Gran Turismo 3 and Wipeout Revolution.

No wonder you don't think much of Halo. I mean, if you can't see the world through unbiased eyes, then you is just a poor sod with no appreciation for beauty. No offence meant.

I think it looks nice and sounds very nice but whether it actually lives up to the claims is another thing.

Interesting article below from gamespy on why this one particular editor believes the XBox will succeed. Not sure if I agree with all the points (a lot of it has been said before) but its well reasoned, and a few of ya might be interested.

I wasnt being unbiased. Only after seeing the Unreal 2 tech demo, Halo left me incredibly dissapointed.

But never mind that mungo.

You are a cuntwitted rimlicker, with the IQ of the average pint of Guiness. You have fetid cheese breath and your mother has rancid fanny jam. No offence meant.

that has to be the most funny and witty (x-rated wittiness) thing i've read in a good while. keep em coming. From looking at mungo, id make an assumption that it is acurate!

Just picked up my Playstation 2. X-box may have more power, but it wont have the rotatey PS logo on the DVD tray :). Seriously tho, I am very impressed with PS2. IMO Tekken TAG is visually stunning (the backdrops are to die for), it makes PSOne games look "nice", and the DVD player aint half bad either.

Just heard one piece of info about X-box, and it has pretty much ruled it out as a contender imo. When asked about X-box's launch price compared to that of PS2, all MS would say is "PS2 doesnt have *real off impressive specs here*. Not a good sign imo. X-box will undoubtedly do well, but it wont overtake PS2/PSOne in market share etc.
