So then. Question.
My house is closing in on getting finished. Still plenty to do but an end (of sorts) is in sight.
My sister has a piano. It used to be in my mum's house but when she moved she had no space for it. My brother and I both learned to play on it and she had space in her house (I was still at Uni I think) and had ambitions for her daughters, but neither could be arsed and both of them have long flown the roost.
Is it poor form to see if she'll part with it? It's ornamental now, but I want to play and it makes me feel sad that it's gathering dust.
However, she's very sentimental. Her and her husband like it, even for it's ornamental value.
Ask, or not ask? What would freddyshouse do?

I'd ask my brothers if they had one not being used and I wanted it, but then we all like each other and get on well.
What's your relationship like with your sister and BIL? Is it the kind of conversation that's likely to start an argument? If so, I wouldn't bother and would just get a freebie off Gumtree.

But really - we're not having computers/TV in the house. They're staying in the shed. Instruments and books in the house

Not a massive fan of their beer.
The no telly in the house thing has been tried before. The temptation is to sit about consuming, rather than doing something.
There's also no natural place for a telly in the house, and we'll have the luxury of a place where we can go and watch something when it's worth it, rather than having chod on.

There's too many temptations to sit about and vegetate. I've probably seen every film really worth seeing made in the last 100 years. Netflix are actively and purposefully dumbing down their content so you can still follow the storyline if you're also browsing on your phone!
Maybe it's a function of time so you feel no urgency, but it's too easy to do nothing but watch shit in the evening - like it's too easy to eat junk food, doomscroll etc. etc.
I'm hoping that making it a little bit harder to watch bollocks I'll try the difficult-but-rewarding stuff a bit more.
Right now I feel a bit hollow. Tryin' to fix it.

I get on OK with them both, but my sister can be a little weird about "stuff" at times.
Going to clear the decks of other stuff first and then ping her kids. If they say they definitely don't want it then that cuts off probably the first place she'll go...

I'd say it's poor form as it's probably part of their home now. Maybe one to go down if she ever mentions getting shot of it or it taking up space

Went round today - it's crammed in the corner beside a new sofa. There's not enough space to sit in front of it properly to play it. It's just a glorified photo stand at this point.
I'm definitely going to ask, but I'm not going to push it too hard. I'll be disappointed if they say no though - musical instruments are not just inanimate objects. My granddad learned to play on this during the war during the blackouts - he could only see a sea of white, with black spaces. So he learned on the black keys - he could play any tune you liked, a semitone out.
If she wants to relegate that to "picture holder" when a nice set of oak shelves would do her just as well...
