For periods during the 19th century, the wealth of Liverpool exceeded that of London, and Liverpool's Custom House was the single largest contributor to the British Exchequer. Liverpool's status can be judged from the fact that it was the only British city ever to have its own Whitehall office.

Follow the link the Wiki refers to and you can clearly see they've misinterpreted what it says:

wiki said:

Source:
Daily telegraph said:
1. The city of Liverpool was created in 1207 when King John granted a Royal Charter which was written in Latin. Liverpool was once the "Second City of Empire", eclipsing even London for commerce at times.

The wealth of London and eclipsing London for commerce are not remotely the same thing. And the second quote about the Customs House has nothing to back it up in the source book (which is a book on architecture, not economics), but, if you think about it for even a millisecond, biggest single source of revenue doesn't tell you anything without knowing the value of the other sources of revenue (2% of revenue could be the biggest source if there are another 98 sources worth 1%, but it doesn't mean its a lot of revenue in itself).

Don't trust off the cuff comments on Wikipedia without looking at where the info comes from.

As above, its undeniable that trade flowed through Liverpool at a huge rate...however, the revenue flowed through London.

It's already been ascertained that Wikipedia is useless unless you verify the sources...that is why the author leaves the references at the bottom and also leaves citations.

If an entry lacks them then consider the entry to be as reliable as the Guardian, or the Sun or any other newspaper.

Even if they have references and citations, its worth looking at them yourself, because, as with this case, they can clearly be misinterpreted or wilfully paraphrased to give a different meaning.

Well, comparable as to a source (books, scientific thesis/articles) that has been deemed credible by universities and people with expertise in the area, whereas 'peer review' can be constantly changing, it's almost like alternative news. There's no guarantee for deep scrutiny from credible experts all the time.

When the peer reviewing it also an idiot, the concept falls flat. As has been demonstrated by your "Richest place in the world" claim. Chinese whispers with an inaccuracy from the start.

I actually used Wikipedia as a source once on an assignment regarding Irish manufactured identity, the idea being that the vast majority of what they claim as a cultural/national identity only goes back a couple of hundred years, as with many places.

I made sure I also referenced their source so I got away with it, I did get warned to be very careful when using Wikipedia as a source.

It's a B-class article that even back in 2004, when standards were much lower, was not promoted to featured article. It even failed good article nomination.

Bootle had the most millionaires in the world in one town, not forgetting that a millionaire back then is practically a billionaire today.
That is all I said, I didn't say Liverpool was the richest city.

All you've said so far is that Wiki is wrong, you haven't proved it, just dissed it.

Most of the real shithole streets have been bulldozed, they are putting lovely houses up as replacements, funny how an area like Bootle can
be turned from utter rank into brick paved roads and and lovely new builds, now you see company cars parked up in an area that was practically a war zone.
Cycle of life I guess, a hundred years ago it was the richest place on the planet.

And no. Nobody has said it is wrong, just that by definition may not be as accurate as it first appears...such as your article that you yet to link.

Yes I have. Using the power of eyes and reading, there's clearly a factual error in the wiki. That fact that you don't do English gud is neither here no there.

I have, because it is. Even without pointing out the errors in the wiki, which are plain, you can point out the logical flaw in "Liverpool was the richest city in the world" through plain deduction.

Also this: "Liverpool's status can be judged from the fact that it was the only British city ever to have its own Whitehall office." The same quote, word for word, is referenced on several "about Liverpool" sites, with no reference to what it actually means. I think these sites are clearly just cutting and pasting each other. What does it mean @Job?

I meant Wikipedia in general, not the specific article.

Most millionaires in one town - that wasn't located just outside Dundee.

And yet again, I still didn't say Liverpool was the richest city in the world, but feel free to go with it if you must.

You said it was the richest place on the planet, it is there in green and white.
