DHL pre pay the vat to make coming through customs faster. They normally charge VAT on the item and the postage and a handling fee. I have stopped using companies that use DHL as everything had charges every time. Anything that uses USPS seems best as it is random 10 parcels last month none with a charge.

Although I went through RedBubble, and as I say, I didn't get charged 3 out of 4 times - but when I did get charged, RedBubble paid the costs anyway, which was cool of them.

Amazon.com pre pay it too which saves handling fees you can also spend a certain amount without getting taxed.

More than likely electronics through Customs / Royal Mail / UPS etc will mean you'll get taxed for it. However if you get it delivered to your sister and she resends it with a note inside to say it's a personal gift you'll be exempt.

So can't the whole "it's a gift" thing be done beforehand and it be okay?

Not by the company selling it. A lot of them specifically say that they won't lie about the contents of packages for duty purposes.

If it is from family then they can say it is a gift but it does not look like it matters.
