Sitting at my computer thousands of miles away, I'm sure they could've subdued him without shooting him (it says they tried gas, why wouldn't that have worked?). But fair's fair, once you start shooting at the US police you have to expect them to shoot back. It says his age wasn't revealed until post-mortem but maybe they didn't even see him before they shot him.

You know, I figured that once he was on his own, they could have left and sent some plainclothes back later.

He'd have calmed down...

You can't know that.

True. But throwing gas in and storming his bedroom is only going to result in one outcome, no?

The pair he was threatening were safe. I say removing yourself from the equation for a while is a better move.

Except your knowledge is imperfect, so you can't know that. What if he could escape via another entrance and shoot someone else? What if there was someone else in the building the police (or the other victims) didn't know about? Once people start firing guns the least risk option rapidly becomes taking out of the equation, 107 years old or not, and from where we're sat we can't know the full circumstances, so there's no point in second-guessing what the cops did.

I've already conceded that point. So yeah, I'm speculating...

I'm speculating that the house was clear (the bloke was in his bedroom after all - so if the rest of the house wasn't clear the police weren't doing their jobs) and I'm saying that falling back gives him an opportunity to calm down. Even if they just resort to a watching brief outside.

There's pressure in the US to finish these things quickly because it's expensive having a large police force outside a house for ages. Quickly often results in loss of life, which isn't "protecting and serving" - it's covering your own ass.

Seems he fired out of the building before the cops started shooting. Most of the witnesses seem to think the police didn't have much of a choice. On the other hand, he was black, so they were going to shoot him on general principles anyway ;)

Aye, I've been reading about it.

I don't see how throwing tear gas into a room with an already agitated 107 year old could ever help. He's hardly going to give himself up when he's in that state of mind is he?

House was empty. I'd have thought keeping a watching brief until he had a chance to sort himself out mentally would be the way forward tbfh. Couple of days stewing in the house, watching telly, eating pizza...

Gassing an already agitated gun-toting old giffer can only end badly - and that's what I'm unhappy about. What did they think he was going to do? Of course he was gonna shoot at them.

When they decided to go in, they'd already made the decision to kill IMO...

this tbh. Guns or not, I guess if the US police agencies come in to your house with their current state of mind you're dead if you blink wrong and they'll prolly shoot your kids too if one accidentally farts or something.

but if the people he had been threatening, had had guns of their own, preferably concealed about their persons, this would never have happened

How big a radius around him should the evacuate to make sure he does not come out and randomly shoot at people. As soon as shots are fired the police can't walk away. Imagine they did and he shot someone else there would be hell to pay. He chose to go out like that he could of put his gun down and surrendered at any point. My bet would be he got exactly what he wanted.

I doubt it.

They could leave the house. Have a few sharpshooters covering the exits. If he decides to come out gun-happy then he get shot in the legs first. It's hardly rocket science.

Their chosen course of action is an intent to kill.

How long should they have paid for Snipers to sit and cover each exit? I am sure they would of loved him to put his gun down and get arrested but he decided to aim the gun at them at that point he got shot. Again it was his choice to shoot at police and I still think Suicide by Cop is top of the list.

And guns are too deadly to do this shoot them in the leg crap. The cop shoots him in the leg he shoots the cop in the face. Sorry that is never never land thinking, you aim a gun at the police you get shot it is that simple.

So, I'm basically correct. There IS a price on human life, and it's cheaper to kill them than to try to find a non-fatal ending.

Guess it saves on court costs too.

Are people actually defending someone who's threatening people with guns?

Nope. I'm not defending him. I'm saying there was probably a non-lethal solution to the situation.

Lets face it. The two women he'd told to fuck off away from his bedroom door weren't scared enough to flee from the house. They went downstairs, rang the cops and waited in the house for the police to arrive - they didn't fear enough for their own safety to actually leave the house.

If they'd fucked off to the local tea rooms for the afternoon and just left him alone he'd might well have put the gun down and come out of his own accord. But the cops got involved and death happened.

I think the death happened because he opened fire. That's a big nono in any country.

Imagine if the cops left everyone alone to "cool off" before taking action.

Depending on the circumstances that may be a better course of action...

True, in theory, but with what kind of universal regulations do you control that? Remember that the action needs to work with all cops, all states, all situations. I don't think it's viable to do so when you don't psychological evaluations etc on the field.
