Evaluate the triple integral

IMG00009.GIF

where E lies under the plane z = x + 2 y and above the region in the xy-plane bounded by the curves y = x2, y = 0, and x = 1.

Need to go out so don't have time, I think you want x to run from 0 to one, y from 0 to x^2, z from 0 to x-2y. I did it quickly and got 5/6 but i haven't sketched (it's a sort of curvy 3-d triangle) it and haven't done this sort of thing for years so am not 100%

I bet it's HTTP Referer blocked (so you can't link to it from other sites / forums). If it's already in your browser cache you can see it.

0 <= z <= x+2y

and yeah, its a curvy triangle

5/28

Just checked it, I cocked up the last bit when i scribbled it down, 5/28 is right

edit- Why are you doing random integration? :)

As I explore quantum mechanics, I realise how weak my maths is & need to refresh some basic A-level calculus :)

That's not A-level calculus any more and hasn't been for some time. Many universities end up teaching 1st year physics undergrads all the basic maths they need as what students now turn up with to courses is severally lacking. They often even don't get to the physics stuff until 2nd year.

insert rant about falling education standards

I think you're right Zar. Been looking at a few undergrad syllabus pdf's and it looks like quite a few institutions pack a lot of maths into the first year. Something to consider. :)

I did that stuff in my first year as well (maths course). I took a QM module in my second year from the physics department. You barely needed any maths tbh, just a basic knowledge of operators, complex numbers and a bit of integration. It was really interesting. I've taken a killer 4th year maths module this year that is using all sorts of functional analysis, fourrier analysis and so on. It's much more fun when a physicist teaches it :(

Well I know because during my PhD my Prof got me to take some of his 1st year math lectures, it was great money for a student though the 9am Friday lecture was a bastard to get up for :) When I left the department was seriously considering adding an extra year to the course because the standard of the incoming students was so poor. So called A* students who couldn't even do a double integral.

lol doesn't surprise me...am I being grossly unfair in thinking A levels were harder when we did them years ago? These days everyone is getting 4 A's...I dunno if I'm doing them a disservice...

It's wrll annoying when old people judge the a levels you did. We didn't have q choice, we jury did the stuff they thought us

You know the drill.

Stare at the red dot for 30 seconds, they look away and blink rapidly.

Bit cleverer this one though!

No. You're assessing the situation and understanding that GCSE's and A-Levels are fucking easy nowadays...
