Well if I whas in London at those protests, I'd make sure I made atleast £36.000 of dmg there.

You pay for you own books, housing, food, just everything and basically have todo all the study'ing on your own (ie. hardly any college classes). Yet you need to pay £9.000 a year? What for? Using the toilet at college?

Someone is getting very rich...

I don't know I agree education should be free but If you go to a decent college here in America, for example the one mf GF went to, you are looking at 35-40 thousand dollars A YEAR!

I thought the price of college in America varies depending on quality. Go to the lesser colleges and it's free, go to the best and it costs loads.

A friend of mine is doing a masters and has to pay the full fee, despite the fact that it's completely self taught with no semiars or lectures. All there is is a meeting with a tutor for an hour or so every few months. What the fuck is being paid for?

That is true that it varies, but I've never heard of it being free and you woul be very very rare for you to pay less than 12-15 grand a year here.

Yeah but the American government doesn't take as much money as our government does therefore there's more money coming from you/your family.

University education is clearly an unecessary luxury which i don't think anyone should be opposed to paying for. As those idiots on the TV proved the other night, it's not a 3 year struggle of pennyless existence and work. It's a three year party with the odd hour here and there spent studying. I'd pay £9,000 a year just for the ability to sow so many seeds, but thats just me But on the same token I don't think there should be any barriers to people attending viable courses (I.e those which benefit the country) like sciences, medicine, finance and not the arts or David Beckham studies types you see going just to avoid working.

But I think the mechanics of paying are wrong. Instead of a £9000 yearly bill, how about a lower but sustained 'graduate tax'? Something like £7 a month, but for the rest of your working life from your first pay after graduating.

It's a nice idea but it'd never fly.

It'll be interesting to see what happens from here on in. Just because the cap has been raised to £9,000 a year, it doesn't mean everyone will charge that. If places like Oxbridge, LSE, UCL want to charge thse prices, let them, they are world class Universities and should be able to charge those figures.

If, however, my University (Kent) charged that much per year for tuition then every student would have the right to take them to tribunal for fraud after their 3 years were up.
