So been looking into some metalwork, blacksmith etc. Mostly want to do some training to get me a job in metalwork(fixing cars perhaps) and ofcourse to build some weird sh*t :p

Applications start around, i'd like to say february.

Any ideas, comments, opinions, experience in field etc?

I have plenty of experience in welding, but have never done it for a living - mainly hobby stuff. I've been building motorbikes since my early teens. I daresay there is usually work around for a good welder, but apart from that I don't really know what to add.

Well, hmm, as a hobby ofcourse you can be creative, but do you think as a job it would challenge creativity?

Also is it physical, as in -really- physical, or more towards a light workload?

Reason i'd like to do it is to learn to mold metal, love the concept of it, got creativity up the wazoo and could have a lot of ideas. Also it does seem to have a large workmarket as metal is and will be aruond for a good while.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do and how creative you are. If you do it for a living you will probably end up in a factory in a soules job. My Uncle for example has been welding for over 40 years and he builds industiral ovens (heavy, hot and unpleasant work - and he has had two heart attacks in the past three years).

If you are talking about proper Blacksmith type work you are looking at a lifetime apprenticeship really. I don't know a great deal about it but I do know there are literally hundreds of ways to shape and forge iron and steel. A good blacksmith can earn a very good living these days though - being a bit of a dying art ect.

Reguardless, metal working in any field tends to be hard physical work.

Haha this is kindof funny. I remember seeing a pic you posted of yourself in the RL pic thread way back toth. Then about a month later I got a job with this guy who I thought looked just like you. The reason I mention this is that he told me about how he did a course in college that focused on metalwork art. He had learned to shape and mould metal for purely creative reasons. He said it was alot of fun and he loved doing it but seeing as we were both working in a clothes shop im not sure how much work was in it?

6 years ago, when i was unemployed, I almost became a lumberjack (i have a Degree in Management) so go figure ;)

Go for it. There must be something ticking on your mind, and if the posibility exists, by all means, get your qualifications and become a welder

Depending on where you live welding can be very profitable. Ship maintenence is one of the big payers if I remember correctly, oil rigs is another one. Ofcourse you can also do smaller work like building cars and stuff - overall I think it's a fairly decent field to work in, my brother has a fuckload of certifications in it and he's doing really well. So well infact that I'm thinking about it myself from time to time.
