Sardinia.

Just a rough idea at the moment, possibly able to get away for a few days (no more) at the end of May and was looking for somewhere relaxing, affordable and non-chav. Since I can't actually afford to get away anywhere I *really* want to, the South of the island is looking quite alluring for the price.

Anyone been? Anyone have any other similar suggestions? Comments welcome. :)

friend of mine's been to Corsica. landscape was pretty awesome, and he was camping wild. reading up says Sardinia may be similar.

Expensive. Not done Sardinia, but I've done Corsica and I've done Southern Italy and they were both very expensive. Supposed to be very nice in a perma-tan sweater-over-the-shoulder-yacht-club kind of way.

Teedles is coming to Edinburgh at the start of June. You could come up and swaffle him, and the missus could watch. :)

Trip to Liverpool or Peterborough m8. You'll get your passport done whilst you wait if you ring 'em up first. Did it earlier this year...

Have you actually been?
I live in a suburb of blackpool ish, and the media image of blackpool is a lot harsher than the reality.

Really the scumhole label is about 15 years out of date.

Berlin wall down today? etc etc.

friend of mine's been to Corsica.

I have family there, Ajaccio and Corté. Lovely island.

If you want more of a touristy place, hit the first of the two. Is quite nice.

Of course there are a few places which are quite nice (flying to the island from the UK, but can't pinpoint where exactly)

Irrelevant since it doesn't match any of the requirements needed. ;)

It IS a scumhole though. Sorry you have to live there.

Do you have any more info or a link for this? Dunno how possible it would be since both aren't exactly close (although Peterborough is a manageable drive) and what the costs are, but will look into it.

On what experience is it a scumhole?

I realise it's popular to bash "them up north" but really?

I loved Sardinia! It was really lovely. Some great beaches (but not everywhere..so choose with care).

I would definitely go again. It is quite unspoilt by the general tourist which I love.

I didn't find it too expensive...I hired a car and drove everywhere. Its really easy to do as the roads are pretty good ( esp the motorways) although the "city" driving is a little annoying as everyone is trying to drive into your boot.

Alghero was really good as well as Cagliari and Olbia.

oh just seen you cant go.... :(

Well if the wife's passport is out of date have you thought about the channel islands, nice and sunny this time of year, plenty to do with good scenery. There's also the plus side of not having to deal with the current pound-Euro exchange rate.

There are other offices, if your location tag is right, and you are based in london, there is a passport office there as well.

Have a look at Urgent applications - Identity and Passport Service

In an episode of Coast, I saw Sark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for the first time and felt it looked staggeringly pretty and well worth a visit.

edit: bloody wikipedia urls :/

It's 2 square miles :p Not too interested in the channel islands as 1) they're not very interesting 2) more expensive than the holiday I had planned 3) the weather will be crap and 4) they're still quite busy and rammed with old people.

Thanks for the advice regarding passports all, doesn't look like it's a particularly doable to get the passport in time to book the holiday so will have to do a rethink and probably have another holiday free year. :(

You do seem like a pretty prejudiced asscunt on this thread so far.

I'm not saying you stay there for weeks :p you could also get a lodge somewhere in the lake district or scotland, and shag/eat chocolate/play wii sports for a weekend you know.

Not really, I need to go somewhere cheap, warm and relaxing. So not Blackpool and not the Channel Islands because they don't fit the brief. If that's prejudice, then yes, I'm being prejudiced against cold, busy places because I DON'T WANT TO GO THERE. Is it that hard to grasp?

Oh I know you're not. Again, the issues with lodges in Scotland/Lake District is cost and weather, particularly cost.

It is pretty hard to grasp when you're about as factually accurate as a bush official talking about waterboarding.

damn dude, in that case you'd better become a rent boi again because it seems to me that you'll be wanting to get at least as far as Madeira or perhaps the south of France/north of Spain. Bilbao in Spain is a nice place, and Barcelona is too. In fact I know someone who rents out a cheap apartment there who I can contact if you like. All you have to do is get there.

So at the end of May Blackpool is sunny, warm and really quiet?

I understand your need to defend your area but please, be realistic.

I went for an hour long walk along the prom yesterday on a v nice warm sunny day and it was quiet.

I don't feel any need to defend my area, if it was a shithole I'd be the first to say so.

I think its kind of sad that you just write places ( and probably people ) off based on what you hear on TV and/or your perception of a place/people without having been there.

Whatever, go to cheapiza and get trollied in the sun and get skin cancer.

Wow, you completely missed the point.

I want to avoid places like cheapiza, hence avoiding Blackpool.

How on Earth is planning a couple of days break in Sardinia anything like that?

I'm sorry you think I'm spouting off repeated stuff, but I have been there and it really isn't very nice IMO. I like the way you just assumed I hadn't been there though, because I mentioned it was horrible. Well played you. GG on assuming I write people and places off on the basis of actually having a desired holiday brief.

I live in the South of England, so going to Blackpool - even if like you say, was sunny and warm yesterday, it was like that down here also, and probably a good couple of degrees warmer - will be colder than if I stayed down here. I would like to go somewhere warmer, I thought that was made fairly obvious, but you just take it as slanderous abuse.

Basically, if you don't have anything to add to this thread other than "Blackpool's nice, honest!" after I had already stated it wasn't suitable for my holiday requirements, then you don't really need to be posting in here any more.
