Thermal paste

Yo. Advice plox chaps. Tore apart my 360 because after many many many years it randomly RRoD'd.

Seems the thermal paste has gone for a walk, so looking for some advice on:

1. Good, suitable replacement paste
2. How to clean up the existing chips

When i did mine the paste came in little gel squares, got them from eBuyer, and i think i just used meths to get the old stuff off

Cool, cheersies. I think I'll hit up ebay. For a couple of quid it looks like I can get the paste and some replacement screws for the stupid x clamps.

I think nail varnish remover for the removal of paste, and just get some arctic silver paste, very thin and even smear before re-seating cpu...

As for cleaning the mess, on both CPU and radiator - Isopropyl Alcohol.

"Isopropyl alcohol is readily available. Like acetone, it dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds. It is also relatively non-toxic and evaporates quickly. Thus it is used widely as a solvent and as a cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving lipophilic contaminants such as oil. Examples include cleaning electronic devices such as contact pins (like those on ROM cartridges), magnetic tape and disk heads (such as those in audio and video tape recorders and floppy disk drives), the lenses of lasers in optical disc drives (e.g. CD, DVD) and removing thermal paste from IC packages (such as CPUs.)"

edit: if the old paste is rock solid, use plastic "credit card" type card, and gently rinse the CPU surface. Being plastic, it won't scratch - and you can also use it to uniformly spread out the new paste.

I use Isopropyl alcohol, I got a large bottle from the chemist but they won't all sell it to you since it can be rather combustible

Cheers all. Bits from eBay turned up yesterday. Unfortunately it's made no difference and the thing is still buggered. I'm not paying M$ to fix it so it's probably going to be a bin job.

At least I'll still have my Wii
