Ive just picked up a 2.1 gig OEM Barton and popped a hs+fan on there which came with its own Shinzu thermal paste.

It runs idle at about 47degrees pushing it with many things it runs at 54degrees.

I was thinking this might be quite high, though its not dangerous and I don't experience crashes.

I am wondering if I pulled my rig out and popped some Artic Silver 5 or something on it by how much of a temperature decrease I might get.

Just want to know whether its worth the time to do it.

Cheers

latest bartons are good upto 95C so you still got some head room :)

that said my 2800 runs at about 35-40C but with stock cooler but a rear exaust fan and a enermax psu above the cpu sucking the air out aswell

Ok cheers dont think I can be arsed then.

I have two rear fans sucking air out one on the side panel sucking air in and a psu sucking air out too.

I have heard that if a amd cpu runs more than 60degrees then you might be in for a short lifespan. The thought of my little machine dieing scares me.

did you make sure the paste was speard out evenly and verry thin ?

small airpockets in the goo can make the cooler verry ineficient

You just rub off the old crap with a thermal compound remover i.e akasa stuff and a lint free cloth no? I don't want to bust nothin oO.

I think I will do it at some point actually I know Ill use the rest of the artic silver at another time.

And oh yeh Im shocked that chip running at 90 hasn't blown yet :(

not a very high temp.

Arctic silver paste or similar might help take 3-5 degrees from that but not worth it simply make shure you have a decent system cooler to balance it and it wont be any problems.

I enjoy fiddling anyway so will do it.

Only reputable modders build with Artic Silver its a pure crime not to ;)

Wish I did it before when I initially put together the system would have saved me pulling my rig out ahh well.

Gonna use cotton buds and a cleaner to get the goo off the cpu and a tooth brush on the hs. Then apply the AS.

Oh I'll share this with you, you can get AS free shipping from this place http://www.thecoolingshop.com/product_info.php/cPath/35/products_id/745 for 6.45. Thats good some places charge nearer 7 and thats w/o shipping.

It now runs idle at between 38/39 Degrees thats down from 47 which is incredible. As I type its just hit 37.

Haven't pushed the system yet sooo dunno about top temp. But it has cooled by a whopping 9 degrees just by using Artic Silver 5 (which is like half dry cement pushing around the cpu.

Shat my pants doing it but alls well that ends well!
