Oh, do lighten up. I can hardly imagine anyone here not knowing that there is poverty in the world, yet it doesn't have to bitter us all constantly, does it? Telling people what I've gotten for Christmas isn't meant in any way to mock the poor ones, it's just to share your own Christmas experience.

Dont see the point in comparing gifts with each other tbh. Personaly i find it pretty disgusting when people get very expensive gifts or alot of money etc and are smug about it when theres so many out there that dont even get a decent meal at christmas, or have a place to sleep etc, or children whos parents cant afford expensive gifts or "forgot" to buy anything because of their alcohol abuse and so on and so forth.

The Christmas gift spending in Sweden broke a new record (53.000.000.000kr or roughly 587.000.000 euro) this year (like every previous year for the last 20 or so) and was greater than the total spendings (including industrial and financial investments etc) in Ghana for 2006.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere else that America not having X-mas for one year (minus presents and everything to do with x-mas altogether) would wipe out poverty forever - in terms of cash saved (assuming it was used and distributed correctly).

The general public do have a very big impact on poverty. If everyone brought fair-trade products, some countries income would dramatically increase. If our companies didn't rip off the third world in terms of economic factors, they'd not be in such a dire situation.

As individuals in a developed country, together we could potentially make a difference. It's just a shame a lot of the money that tries to be put into communities is not evenly spread but rather a small minority get the large majority.

That said, I don't agree with what Fana said. Not all of us here are rich mofoers. For us, Christmas is a time to be spoilt - what is wrong with that?

We aren't exactly the richest people on the planet(most of us here anyway), and take one day a year to spend a bit of our own earnt cash on people close to us. There are bigger wigs to fry that spend a hell of a lot more every day, then the average Christian on a Christmas Day. I don't see any valid reason for you to come here and make people who are able to show appreciation towards each other on that one day a year by giving gifts and enjoying each others company.

We are not comparing gifts with eachoter, we are just saying what we got for christmas, were not posting here to see who is richer and who is poor.

We spoil eachoter with christmas presents and luxury in christmas. And maybe we spend alot of money between Christmas and Newyearseve, but dont you think we spend more money on stuff we could live without between newyear and christmas then between christmas and newyear?

That said, i think its sad that there is poverty in the world, but i dont really get why people think its disgusting to use so much money in christmas times..

Partly true. Local factors play a role, but they're not the only ones.

We influence their poverty/bad condition directly by:
a) Protectionism. If the market were truely free, the economy of the third-world countries would be better off, as they would have a chance to compete with the farmers in the technologically advanced countries.

Rich countries cut their tariffs by less in the Uruguay Round than poor ones did. Since then, they have found new ways to close their markets, notably by imposing anti-dumping duties on imports they deem ‘unfairly cheap.’ Rich countries are particularly protectionist in many of the sectors where developing countries are best able to compete, such as agriculture, textiles, and clothing. As a result, according to a new study by Thomas Hertel, of Purdue University, and Will Martin, of the World Bank, rich countries’ average tariffs on manufacturing imports from poor countries are four times higher than those on imports from other rich countries. This imposes a big burden on poor countries. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimates that they could export $700 billion more a year by 2005 if rich countries did more to open their markets.

b) Pharmaceutical patents. Due to the current patent rules on pharmaceuticals medical conditions accounting for 90% of the global disease burden receive only 10% of all pharmaceutical research worldwide. Pharmaceutical patents as they are also mean that poor countries don't have access to the medicines they need, because they're too expensive. (Before the TRIPs agreement there was no real patent-law in third-world countries, so they could produce the drugs they need at a lower cost. The fact that the third world countries agreed to sign the TRIPs agreement means very little, see my next point.)

We influence it indirectly by the priviliges we give to the rulers of those countries. One doesn't need democratic legitimacy in order to sell all the natural resources of a country, sign treaties and buy weapons to opress the local people with it. By buying their oil and selling them weapons, we're keeping them in charge. You can hardly hold the people who are being oppressed by a government they didn't elect responsible for their poverty. Independent of all this: most of the people suffering from poverty are children and you can't hold those children responsible for the poverty.
