The war in Iraq has to go down as one of the most misguided, vote winning debacles of the century.
The loss of life is obscene, the only viable justification that can be used is that Saddam was flipping the bird and we had to act or face humiliation on the world stage.
As for the BBC, they take left wing views to the end of the road and back, which is I guess what you'd expect from the public sector.
Saddam was sat there keeping a nice lid on fundamentalist looney religion and also suppressing Iran, who we now need to fight on the nuclear issue.
Just like Libya, Iraq was an affluent secular country (Not he official line) with a comfortable middle class and we bombed them back to square one for pretty well nothing, except maybe the fear he might pass on the weapons we sold him to the nutjobs.

The problems that Iraq had before Saddam came to power (that's its an artificial country made up of people who hate each other) haven't gone away, and unlike Libya, or Egypt, or Tunisia, the "solution" to Iraq's repressive regime has come from outside at the end of a gun. What peace there is now won't last.

As for Mugabe, no-one cares about black africans who don't have oil. He's Africa's problem, let them deal with it, or not.

As I recall, this was the line of argument used to support the dictators in the North African states. They're mostly gone now, so what's your excuse there?

Saddam was a mass murdering nutter. I'm glad he's gone, as, I suspect, are most Iraqis.

Glad he's gone too, pity it took half a million innocent deaths to remove him, but that's just statistics, unless one of them is a loved one, then the whole thing has a radically different spin.
Pictures on the wall of a missing husband/dad/wife/daughter live with someone for life, just another war to us.

I don't disagree with that. (Apart from the nutter bit - I think he was totally sane) - but I'd add that I think the Iraqi's hate us more.

But it matters not a jot - we've got a puppet government in and have effective control over their financial institutions - which, in the end, is all that matters.

It doesnt matter if your a Ba'athist, or a Sunni, or a Shia, or a Hutu or a Tutsi. Because you have a greater problem, you have the white men in their red/blue/whatever coats, taking all your ivory/sugar/whatever. that unites the country against the foreign invaders. Now. said invader sods off, you end up with a country full of people with weapons and nobody obvious to attack. hang on a sec! you go to a different church/school/garden party ! *stab*

Being left alone > being colonised > being colonised and then abandoned

You couldn't be more wrong. The British Empire was built on getting one tribe to subjugate another tribe in exchange for British backing (usually the minority tribe got to oppress the majority one). Then the British fuck off in a fit of embarrassment and/or indifference at having had an empire in the first place, and you're repeatedly left with "nations" abritrarily thrown together by the former colonial masters that lump oppressed majority in with formerly imperial-backed minority. There's a barely a border in Africa that makes any sense from the perspective of the people who actually live there. Same in a lot of the middle-East; the borders of Iraq were drawn up by a woman sketching out a map in the sand with her umbrella!

But I agree. I don't think the average grunt in the US Army can stand toe to toe with history's most famous/infamous fighting forces.

I know he's their boss and everything but how the hell can he possibly think this? In the history of the world you're the best at going into a country without a basic infrastructure, which is tribal, has a fighting force made up of badly trained gangs using weapons which are out of date and then killing boat loads of civilians because your uber fighting units and amazingly advanced computer controlled weapons systems can't actually differentiate between the enemy and a bunch of people doing their shopping at the market?!
