Just listened to an interview with Stephen Hawking on the radio. He said there was a less than 1% chance that the LHC would produce black holes tomorrow.

So, one out of 200 maybe?

I don't really like the chances of "world destruction" being better then winning the lottery

It's just my bugger luck that the world will end and I don't win the lottery :(

Except it's not the chances of world destruction, but the chances of a minuscule, harmless black hole being created. Quote from the article: "If the collisions in the LHC produced a micro black hole, and this is unlikely, it would just evaporate away again, producing a characteristic pattern of particles. Collisions at these and greater energies occur millions of times a day in the Earth's atmosphere, and nothing terrible happens."

lol all this fuss and theres not even gonna be a collision its simply a test to get the particle beam around the full circuit which is not guarnteed and even if it is it will be shut down shortly after to allow fine tuning for collisions at full energy.

They are turning it on today, but it won't be until mid-October until they actually collide the particles, and then the results won't be available for 2-3 years. I think today they just wanna test to see if it can heat left-over pizza up.

Well its switched on. Over the course of this morning they are going to send a beam round in one direction. Then, this afternoon, they will try to send the beam round in the other direction. They'll be doing it in stages and blocking off the beam at intervals so they can check its working ok and take measurements. Then as I said above, it won't be until mid October that they'll actually collide the beams, and it will take years for the results to be announced due to the huge amount of data that the supercomputers need to process. They are using a grid of computers across Europe to share the processing power. And one ZX81.

The LHC has been placed on red alert, we could die at any moment

It would be more ironic if on the day stated instead of the LHC creating something to destroy us, we get hit by a giant meteor and all life is erased.

But then my thoughts on irony have always been rather strange....

Well, let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet gentlemen....

they havent tested the particle collision yet, and i guess thats where the risk of being engulfed by a suddenly created "black hole" is :flame:

There's more chance of headcrabs than us being wasted by this experiment :p
