What they are trying to do is find evidence for a theoretical particle known as a Higgs-Boson. It's theorised that this particle existed immediately after the big bang and decayed to give rise to other particles, bestowing the property of mass to them as it did so.
It's an attempt to get at a theory of everything. At the moment the particle physicists are stuck in that respect because they have a theory describing everything on a sub atomic level...apart from gravity. When they include gravity into the equations you get lots of infinities (Infinities are generally bad because they are impossible in this context).
Some also want to find out if string theory is true but that's a whole big mess that they've been cooking up for years without being able to prove one little bit... like building a stack of cards onto a bouncy castle (one small child is all it takes to dislodge everything).

Black holes will not consume the earth, if as seel says they already admitted they created a nano black hole... then why hasn't it swallowed us up and sucked the earth from the inside like a milkshake through a straw?

Just spoke to a man I know who is into all this and has a PHd in quantum physics or something like that and he reckons is all baloney and the chances of it creating a black hole are something like 1 in a trillion to the power of a trillion and even if they did, it would collapse within a millionth of a second. The only way to sustain a black hole would to be have collider bigger than the earth.

Most painfull death you can imagne sadly as you get stripped atom by atom and streched and squashed + as time is warped it will feel to yourself like days where as to the outside world (well away from the black hole) it could be hundreds of years you are being slowly pulled apart.
