You gotta admit, I hardly post now, so tis fair to say me month or 2 of spammage has been payed off now... 3000 posts in 2 yrs aint that much @ the end of the day :)

Plus, I used to help anyone and everyone with hardware probs back in the day when I could be arsed, so I must be commended for that :D

Getting rid of the post count is a good idea. People would still spam like mad to get a forum 'rank', but maybe that could be made dependent on length of membership or summat (with demotions for posts that consist of just a smiley ;)).

Right, I added a thread in the BarrysWorld section here asking for the counter [or at least the mechanism that displays it] to be disabled.

Please don't post there of yet, as I'd really like the mods/admins to have a go first so their thoughts on the issue are aired [in a manner of speaking :)]

It's easy enough to do but trust me it doesn't stop spam as titles are diplayed.

This issue had gone in at www.apolyton.net/forums for quite some time, it is a serious place but the spammers van get out of hand. There solution was to make post counts not count in the off-topic forum. This produced more constructive on-topic posting, and the spam died down as there was nothing to gain.

I really don't see what the problem is. Is the General thread getting too big? Are people talking about rubbish on the other dedicated threads (wouldn't know - I never visit them!)

Surely part of the appeal of the BW General thread is it's pub atmosphere where people can chat about whatever. I never really noticed a spamming problem here just the occasion over-zealous abusive posts from the #Q2 bunch, which is the only problem I'd highlight, if I felt it was that serious.

Why not just let people chat, y'know? Soon there'll be no smoking, no drinking on the BW forums.

My round, who wants what?

True, true. Indeed the "pub" atmosphere in General is part of what I really like about BW.

But have you ever seen someone post several [dozen] times in a row just to get a high postcount? I have and it's a pain, even in our relaxed general forum :( Stopping the counter is one way of making stuff like above disapear.

Traditionally there has been no moderator appointed to the general forum and that formula has worked, as the forum regulates itself quite nicely [if you ask me]. Formally asking the admins to consider shutting off the counter [because a bunch of us feel it would be better that way] is just an extention of our self-moderation.

that's exactly what I love doing in the general forum, and it's allowed [thank goodness :)]

but we're not trying to have that stopped m8eh, we're just attempting to curb the multiposters who are just in it to get as high a postcount as they can.
we believe that having the counter turned off will help that.

as to some of the ppl being abusive, they usually have a reason for it, even if it's not imediatly apparent. some of them do not suffer fools lightly, and will bark at them. I personally do not condone swearing, but I understand why some of the peeps do it.
the only thing I can say is if you find it excessive, go and have a chat with the person in question and ask them to tone it down a bit.

Well in my local the chaps (and chapesses) don't sit around saying "wibble" and smiling everytime somebody says something (except for Mick, but he's always been a bit odd).

And if people spoke to each other in the same way as they do here, there'd be blood up the walls.

This sounds like an excellent idea, tho embattle just doesnt want anything to do with it, why not make it possible to edit viewing this kinda stuff in personal options? So that you can toggle if you wanna see their counts or whatever?

What are you smoking? Embattle DOES want the post count removed. No toggling, no compromise. Remove the post counting

All the recent comments are totally unjustified and it'll just be a waste of the moderators time. All you are asking for is a tiny size 10 font saying 'Total Posts' x amount just to be deleted because you are fed up of hearing ppl say 'yay my total posts is 2000!!, what an achievement by me'. Whats the point?

bluh bluh.

Just let people have fun:D If ppl like Moving Target and Someguy and others wanna brag about their post count let them:)
