The Shining

I read the book a couple months ago and I was looking forward to seeing one of the on-screen representations of the story. I was told that the movie with Jack Nicholson didn't stay true to the book so I rented out the mini-series DVD with Steven Weber.

Everything seemed wrong with it. The acting was shabby, the guy playing the hotel manager was totally unconvincing. The woman playing Wendy really annoyed me and seemed a pretty bad actor too. And jesus christ I didn't think that I'd make it through 4 hours of seeing that kids goofy expression. Turned the thing off after half an hour before it started to annoy me.

Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance but I don't really want to taint my memories of the book, as it's a damn good book. So is it worth me seeing the Jack Nicholson movie or should I just ditch the idea and stick with my memories?

I would say the Jack Nicholson version is pretty shite too.

Forget that TV thing existed and rent/borrow/steal a copy of the Kubrick film.

I've watched it with female friends and laughed as they shit themselves over Nicholson's performance.

"Here's Johnny!"

Its got a few minor flaws but is a cracking film nonetheless imo.

I disagree, although I think Nicholson is generally overrated, that version of The Shining was a good horror film.

I've never read the book but I love the film. It has a few good scares, great atmosphere, and Jack Nicholson is hilarious (in a good way).
