I bet everything I own you would never make it into the SAS.
I have a friend who has just come out after serving in iraq. Ive listened for literally hours to the stories he has told me, all the way from training up until iraq.
If I was you, id aim for the Paras which is where he came from

Tbh, don't go server in a different country..
My big brother is going to Kosovo(Yeah I know it's not Afghanistan or Iraq) and it's killing me that I am going to say bb to him this february and not knowing if he is coming home in 1 piece

One thing no-one has mentioned - the SAS they reckon has relaxed slightly on its recruitment policy due to Iraq - quite simply shitloads of SAS have left over the last few years to do private bodyguard work in Iraq because the pay is much higher etc and this obviously has depleted the actual SAS from what I have heard by quite a bit. Not sure how much easier the process would be or if simply they are just going to look to recruit more quickly or what, but by all accounts Iraq/Afghanistan havent done the SAS any favours.

lol this is a story told to me by a guy i used to know who was in the SBS. sitting comfortably? good then i'll begin...
we were all out on a training exercise and one of the guys got hit by a boat prop and was wounded pretty badly, the medic was a guy called hoppy and when we got the injured man to shore he definately needed stitches but hoppy didnt have his medikit bag fully equipped so had to use the button thread from his trousers to sew him back up.
we get back to the base and take the injured man immeadiately to sick bay, the doc in charge then proceeds to shit a rather large brick because the area around the wound has gone a lovely sickly shade of green, the casualty also shits himself and while they are both laying bricks hoppy is in the corner laughing like a madman, after he's let them panic and stew for a while he reminds them that he used green thread to sew the guys guts back up... the dye came out on to the wound

Just been looking at more para stuff, started fitness training properly today, I doubt I'll join up for atleast another couple of months because I'm determined to go in only when I'm as ready and as sure as I can be that its what I want to do...
Anyways, I found this video which I've only actually watch half way through, its linked from the para website, starts pretty funny, the rest of it has been very helpfull - shows exactly what kind of stuff you're going to be doing and what kind of fitness level required. No doubt selection is harder, but it gives a bit of an insight into the type of fitness required, hope it helps.

I think as people have said joining the SAS is not a second job type thing you will in all likelyhood fail the mental aspect. As if joing the SAS is not what you have always wanted chances are you will not push your self hard enough. Also unless you plan on trainning hard for a year i would not even bother even generally fit people soliders ect have to step up trainning. Like some one said read Chris Ryan and Andy McNabs books for how they got through selection. I know im not nearly brave enough to try the SAS just thinking about the stuff those guys are asked to do its not for me.
A friend of a friend was on SAS are you tough enough and the advice they give is to find a training partner who is going for selection too as well as some one who has passed and to run as much of the tests as you can befor you apply. And don't do selection in November.

Sheesh. One step at a time Elkie. First I should think you have to ask yourself a few questions. Like can you stand to be shouted at. Can you stand with being told to do something when you know it isn't right without question. Can you take discipline big time. I should think you would need to try the army out first and not commit yourself long term so you can 'bail out' should it not be for you. SAS is for the real 'hard men' or 'nutters' as I have seen mentioned. Super fit buggers too I bet. Neither for me thank you as I hate being told what to do. Try a little first and then reappraise me thinks is a good idea. Always keep the 'get out of jail' card handy.

just been reading this post and here are my thoughts, ideas and suggestions
SBS actually recruite from all arms now (all forces). the TA dont have a division for the SAS, they have 21 SAS and 23 SAS and the regular army having 22 SAS. 21 and 23 SAS recruite people like the other TA units do and are not full of old guys from 22 SAS but they do their selection over the course of 6 months i believe which in my opinion would be a lot easier than trying to do it in one go.
i disagree that people who want to serve in elite regiments have something wrong with their heads. its just their way of wanting to work with the best and in the elite regiments you are less likely to get sh*theads and wank*rs than regular units in the rest of the armed forces due to the selction and training system.
with regards to the recommend you i doubt thats usual practise unless you are an officer from an army officer family and you personally know the generals at the top of the army food chain..
from time to time there is a number on the bottom of the armed forces payslips which i cant remeber exactly what it said but it was for sorting out a place for your self on selection for the SAS which you had to go and speak to the adjutant and the commading officer of your regiment/corps.
if you are wanting to be a police officer 1st and army 2nd, why not join the Royal Millitary Police? when you come out of the RMP you will find it very easy to become a police officer in almost any constabulary in the country.
or if you want to become SF (special forces) personal, the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (which used to be 14 Int company which could work in Northern Ireland only but since the scale down of the troops and hostilities have had to re-structure) support millitary and civil actions have the least gruelling selection of all of the UK SF, not to say it isnt hard.
as it has already been stated within this post the SF units in the UK look to recruites who have served approx 2-3 years in the green army before applying.

as far as i know there isnt any application forms either but if you speak to your officers in your unit and inquire about selection for SF, it is classed as a course and your officers will talk to you about your reasons for applying for the course.
i really dont think that the parent units of people trying to join the SF units watch their troops and pass on recommendations to the SAS, SBS, or the SRR as they dont want to lose possibly their best soldiers. it is up to the individual to inquire.
