As I recall, you can apply directly to the SAS but most of their intake is referrals from other units - mostly other elite regiments like the Paras or the Royal Marines. If you are really set on joining the SAS I'd say good luck, only a tiny fraction ever get as far as an appraisal and very few of that tiny fraction actually get through their selection tests. It's probably best to talk to the various RM/Army recruiting officers who will have a much better idea of what sort of avenues are open to you.

Training is hard over here to ... but nothing to intense 1 mile run in the morning and the like ... and ofc that wonderful conditioning for the 1st month or 2 ... Break you down and then build u up again bollox :twak:

First of all, I'd advice you to try ordinary military first matey.

Just serving in a foreign country is hard - Personally I've served in Iraq just near Al Basrah. Even ordinary soldier stuff can be hard from time to time.

I dont know THAT much about elite units, the thought about joining the Danish Elite unit crossed my mind but after Iraq I didnt bother :p

You make valid points which I was ofcourse already aware of, but ofcourse this thread is only about my plan B as a carrer as my number one goal is two become a full time police officer:), mainly about asking people with military experience for advice ect.

I live near essex, don't bang me up plz ;/

Tbfh mate if you don't get into the police force I don't see alot of chance for you to get into the SAS. There one of the most toughest Elite groups around and most of them are scotish!.. Fucking nutters... Anyway, I work with alot of old army nutters and they've met some SAS and they said there out of there head. I wish you the best of luck in what you do but you've got to be really really tough to get in! If you don't get into the police i'd suggest the Army and then think about special services ;)

Getting into the police force is not my problem here? I said plan B incase police force does not work out? Meaning that I might want to leave it for something else; meaning the S.A.S or any other Military activities.

With Marines you can head for the SBS which is the Royal Navy equivilant. Would recomend trying the TA to start with to see if you can deal with the way the Army is run. The SAS have a TA division mainly formed out of old SAS personel so could always get in touch with them via the TA to see what is involved.

Another option is the Royal Engineers, good thing about that is they teach you a trade so when you leave you have some some other qualification to serve you later in life.

Yea but going through RM basic training is strongly advised before going near an elite unit like the SAS no ?

Someone has to keep the Gypsies/Chavs/Wasters in line ... its funny how peoples Respect for any police force raises in someones eyes when they need them to restore order :D

They may just be the lap dogs of the current administration but it is the one the all knowing majority voted for :p

I didn't say it was, but plan B meaning if plan A doesn't go through you will want to go for plan B. Which if i'm not mistaken means if you don't get into the police you will try and get into the SAS ?

That's fine, but surely it would be more of a personal goal than a plan "B"

was only trying to give some advice. :twak:

Join the Police or SAS? Have you asked Staj's permission?

Seriously, basic military training is a good idea first. As said, the majority of SAS come from elite units anyway. The SBS? Now they're even harder to get into, they're the ones that the SAS think are mental.

Am I assuming you are making a special effort to get into the Police? As in becoming a Special Officer first? I'd also like to point out that there seems a vast difference in being in a regimented lifestyle of the armed forces and the command structure and yet civilian response nature of the Police.

The SAS do not recruit from the public, you have to have been a member of the regular army or possibly the Territorial Army first for atleast 3 months to be elligable to take selection (or alteast it used to be that afaik). You also have to have atleast 2-3 years still to serve.

You can take selection twice during your army career, after you fail the second time you cant apply again.

Selection is run twice a year, some say its harder in the winter but then the DS are supposed to be a (very) little bit more lenient in winter and factor the climate into thier assessments.

The first part of selection, after the medical and interveiws, is standard hiking, there is alot of hard walking/running during the first phase, you need to be a bit of a marathon runner to get past it. they have you doing basic sprints, long distance runs with all of your kit and then the endurance marches that have you going round the welsh mountains, all the while you're given the minimum in sleep/food to keep you going. This first stage lasts around a month, three weeks of assessing you as you train up and then a week of tests where you are in a pass/fail situation, again being assessed towards the final decision as to whether you go on or you get RTU'd.

The next part, assuming you pass, is jungle training, they ship you off to the borneo or where ever and you learn all the basic stuff you need to stay alive in a hostile environment. You go over basic patrol skills, more hiking but this time in tropical climates, all the while the DS are there watching and assessing how you deal with the stress, how well you work with others, how you react etc etc. The final stage of the jungle training is a long distance patrol with strict water/waste and light discipline(eg. use only water you carry with you, store all your crap in a bag and carry it with you, no fire and little light.).

The final main testing phase of selection is escape and evasion. you learn even more about navigation and living off the land whilst staying hidden, then you are set loose on some part of wales or wherever and given two days headstart before a Guards regiment starts looking for you, for this test each of the SAS candidates gets split up and grouped with people from other regiments who take the E&E course, you go in teams of four, each having one SAS candidate and three from the other regiments, these being RAF pilots/artillery observers and other "prone-to-capture" personell. The idea being you have to work as a team with people who are not qualified to the same standard as you and have to make the best of a bad job, again you are assessed throughout the test on how well you work with others and how you deal with pressure and react to nasty situations.

The Guards regiment hunting you gets helicopters, NVGs and a big fucking bonus if they catch you so they're well motivated. Assuming you reach the final RV you get 'ambushed' by the guards and taken to the interrogation phase.

Not alot is known about the interrogation phase, aside from the fact that the people doing the job are actually the same people who interrogate real POW's for the UK, the idea being they train you and get to practice in the process.

After this its all down hill, parachute training, weapons training, advanced trade training and then off to the squadron you'll be serving with.

Aside from that its hard to know what else is fact and what else is rumour. There are alot of sources on the net that can help with information. Best bet for joining the SAS would be joining the Paras for sure.

You have to be fucking fit, resistant to stress, able to work in a team and ready to die doing something no one will ever know about.

They dont... I watched a bunch of coppers talk to a bunch of 16/17yr old chavs clearly drunk, and then let them walk away where they went to the nearest bus stop where they hurled abuse at people waiting and smashed up some lad who dared talk back to them when this chav threatend to "'ave 'im". I would have thought the police would have at least kept an eye on them... fucking disgrace the cops can't do anything anymore to prevent anti-social behaviour and when they do they take it too far and end up hurting the innocent.

Fucking shocking watching this country wash down the drain. They are too busy arresting people for having a piss down an alley.

Cant edit my original post, but all this SAS talk has gotten me interested again :) (I'm currently looking into joining the parachute regiment), I just found a quote which sums up the whole SAS selection procedure:

"We don't try to fail you, we try to kill you."

This is quite true afaik, from what I've heard there are quite a few deaths as a result of training exercises and not a few very serious injuries, mainly because the training is as close to the real thing as it can be, in certain circumstances training is said to be harder than the real thing, as they say; train hard, fight easy. train easy, fight hard - and die.

I have no army background (well grandad was in the gurkas) but i've heard stories from a medical perspective of search and rescue ops on snowdon because army folks were told to march up there with nothing but boxers and a tshirt on, and a backpack full of bricks, in the middle of winter. Naturally, someone was injured and no first aid kit = problem when your just in tshirts.
If I was hard, could ignore pain, physically fit, and wasnt going to die, then it would be fun, but as i cant do any of them, I'd personally steer well clear of it. But then, i'm a big wuss.

As has been stated here the SAS recruit through other 'feeder' regiments of a more eilite nature... For example, trained snipers from the Royal Greeen Jackets, explosive experts from the Royal Engineers, experts from the marines and paras etc etc... The selection process is extremely tough and iirc you need to have served for a minimum of 3 years in your past regiment and have a good record with experience on operations. I learnt all this while on a recruitment weekend through the Army Cadet force (I was in the ACF for 6 years and believe it or not u learn a heck of a lot about army life and the recruitment side of things) which is the main form of recruiting the army actively participate in.

Don't join the army with the notion that all u want to do is be in the SAS. After 3 years or so u may fail your selection and this only leads to disapointment. Join the army because you want to and that it is the right thing for you. Join a regiment that will give you valuble life skills so that when you leave you arent just a squadie with little or no real life skills. With this in mind think about a career in the royal engineers and get a trade. If you really have your heart set on infantry stuff then the marines or paras is deffinately the way to go. Out of 6 of my friends who all joined The Royal Green Jackets only 2 stayed due to the complete culture shock of being surrounded by complete fuking meet heads. They are now in holding battalions with fuck all to do until they get transfered. The paras and marines have a different kind of squadie... a more inteligent one tbh and are deffo worth trying to get into over other infantry regiments.

Gl :D

Have no one seen the programs they show on like Discovery and such channels about what kinda tests they have to go through to actually become a member of S.A.S? People that want to join really do have something wrong in there head.

And yea, I think right order to get into S.A.S would be army/marine->elite unit then apply or have someone high up recommend you.

Thanks alot for the replys guys, as said my aim is to first become a full time police officer which is hard enough as it is at the moment due to other irl stuff going on.

Thanks to you Dukat very detailed description, the very fit part is not a problem for me, but I cant say that until I go through the actual training which sounds rough as fuck, as people say the best idea would be to go into the Military services, which will prob be as you said 'the para's'.

Cheerz again for advice all

you must be a serving soldier for at least 3 years before applying for the SAS

My bets is to join the Guards, paras, marines one of the elit infantry. Your training will be tougher than any other regiment in the army which will put you on better footing to go for selection after the 3 year period.

Its not an easy thing to do it requires not only superhuman fitness but a very strong will and a hard backbone.

I was in the guards and that was tough enough believe me

Elkie follow my instructions exactly...

1) Find an SAS man
2) Find an officer or whomever recruits for the SAS
3) Take SAS man to whomever does the recruiting
4) Beat the shit out of them both
5) Tell them your tough enough to get in
6) Sleep with their wives if they say no

Royal Marines tend to go into the SBS (Secret Boat Service)
My Uncle used to be in the SAS, if you need information PM me and I can ask a few in the office here.
Most of the recruits (as already mentioned) are from Para's / Guards and its 3 years minimum and a real hard push to get into SAS / SBS.
If Army is your second choice, then my guess would be SAS is a long shot and not worth setting such a high ambition... its tough in the Marines as it is!
