Here is a little perspective from the other side (Belgium)
Over here it is mandatory to present yourself at the polling booth (risk of fine)
result : small number dont bother anyway, alot of people vote extreme right becuase they dont want to vote for any of the other party's.
If you dont go to vote, your vote goes to the biggest party in your district.
If you vote blank your vote gets distributed (eg if a party has 10% then they get 10% of the blank votes aswell)
(its realy abit more complicated then that but it boils down to this)
