PARAS 10 - The Ultimate In 10 Mile Endurance Races

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be attempting the P-company challenge for the Para's 10 this year, and was wondering if anyone else was doing it? or interested in coming along?

I know we have a few lads here who're either in the army or have been in there, plus a few fitness fanatics, and this seems like it might be thier sort of thing maybe(?)

The course is 10 miles over hilly terrain with a 35lb bergan on, you get three hours to do it, after which a sweep bus picks you up :) There is also another race on the same course, at the same time, which is just a 10 mile run with no weight etc.

I was wondering though, because if enough were interested we could try to get a team together and get ourselves sponsored? Should be good fun either way though.

Did this earlier today! Great fun! :)

It was great, the atmosphere before the start was top notch, once started everyone was still really friendly - met loads of great people on the way round. They weighed my bergan and found I'd put 40lb in there instead of just the required 35, they were ok with it though so I ended up doing 5lb more, dont think I really noticed it that much though in the event.

My time was 2 hrs 30ish(apparently) - need to wait for the results, but either way I avoided the "sweep bus of doom" which supposedly went round at 3 hours to pick all the stragglers up :)

I was just pleased to finish though! I've been training, but there are no hills where I live, so I was really half expecting to end up keeled over half way up one of those monsters :) really pleased I managed it :D

The start was alot faster than I'm used to but I found it probably set me up to keep a bit of a faster pace all the way through. I tagged along with some coppers for the first few miles until they more or less split up into different groups, I was really worried I'd reveal something while I was chatting to them though! :D

At about mile 4 I started tagging along with a guy who had been going at roughly about my pace, had a good laugh chatting in between running.

Some of the hills were alot worse than I'd expected! A couple of times I thought "oh thats a big hill" coming up to one, only to realise you had to go down this great dip before you even started, haha

The highlight was the lake - just after I'd linked up with this other guy we were chatting away and almost went the wrong way because everyone was going off in one direction, but the race marshal said "no no you guys go that way (pointing the other way), you've got to see the lake!" as if it was some big tourist destination :) From then on all we could say was "got to go see the lake!" "have you seen the lake?" etc etc in sarcastic tones :D

Loved every minute of it though, I was pushing pretty much all the way round, but I expect with a bit of training those 40 minutes will soon disappear :)

Great fun, challenging but having done it feels great - I was a little concerned I'd really struggle as I just havent had any hills to practice on previously, well I struggled, but still managed to finish, 30 mins ahead of what I'd really expected :)

Pictures to follow as/when!
