Castaway, not necessarily the whole film, as i think it's quite funny. But the ending, the one thing that kept him going all that time left him in the dark.

As a typical contrast (you "glass half empty" person you! ), how about the most uplifting?

For me, it's Starship Troopers. :)

Dunno... maybe American History X. Such a sad ending.

First film I thought of was Requiem For A Dream, but that was more shocking than depressing.

I don't know about 'ever watched', but I saw The Pledge starring J. Nicholson the other day. That was kinda depressing.

Irreversible

The main scene (cba to use spoilers so not mentioning it) is fucking awful.

As for uplifting it would have to be Salo. Watching a class of American preppy wanker teens forced to eat each other and their own shit is funny as fuck.

Dancer in the Dark is really heavy and depressing, but then when the quote comes up on the screen at the end it makes me feel all good.

'They said it's the last song, but they don't know us you see. It's only the last song if you let it be.'

Fantastic.

Or Braveheart, at the end.

Grave of the fireflies, depressed me immensly despite being a cruedly drawn anime from the 80's. It's about a kid trying to make his way thru life after US bombings hospitalizes there mother in WWII japan leaving him to care for his little sister one his own. A anti-war movie if there ever was one.

I'd have to say that Irreversible was more disturbing than depressing simply because it was so horrificly and graphicly violent.

I found the ending to Gatacca pretty depressing tbh.

You seem to mean "upsetting" instead of "depressing". I find most hollywood films insanely depressing as they're so shit, and it depresses me that they're made and that so many people watch them. Stuff like LoTR, Matrix and the Hulk. Glurb.

God dammit I hated that film. Not because it wasn't well made, the subject area just really disturbed me.

Grave of the Fireflies. Even if you don't like anime, give it a chance.
If I ever want to cry, I watch this movie for immediate relief. It's sad, beautiful and touching.

The only depressing thing about that detestable piece of shit was the unswerving additiction to telling a story that was total bollocks...

Depressing films? Hmmm. Dunno really. Porkies? :)

Threads. Atomic war and an almost documentary style.

The Battle of Algiers also was very sad.
