Whats wrong with driving in the middle lane if the motorway is empty?

Your not causing any grief to anyone at all, if its is as you say, empty

Because god forbid you have to move to the middle lane to overtake a lorry twice on your journey, when everyone coming past you has to move from lane 1 > lane 3>lane 1 to overtake you ( because undertaking is illegal ).

Then you, sir, are sneaky and good!

But I don't believe you... ;)

I do not lie, i always move over, cause i hate it myself when i am in the right hand lane and the fucker infront wont move. I drive how i would like other people to drive for me.

ECA read my other posts before jumping on the bandwagon

I thought you could already be fined for Lane hogging etc under the 'No due regard for other road users' or sommit like that. Covers alot of sins and is 3pts plus a fine.

Which would be fine if you ever saw a traffic cop, but they're an endagered species.

I love overtaking people, and hate it when people act like fucking idiots about it.

I have a 125 bike, it doesnt go all that fast in the grand scheme of things, but I generally overtake if theres a twat sitting infront of me doing a stupid speed on a decent road.

I've been in the position on country lanes before where its completely clear, straight and open, no oncoming traffic and so the arsehole infront sits in the middle of the road to try and stop me getting past, and does 40. There's nothing worse really :( Except possibly when you get the person who then suddenly discovers his accellerator after you've passed him and sits on your backside from then on.

On three lane roads I always thought it was the law to have to go back over to the left when you're not overtaking? I admit I havent done alot of driving on this sort of road though, living in norfolk as I do, the only three lane road we have is full of combine harvesters and cows :(

Xenon lights, and pretty bright.

ooh sorry to get a pot shot in, but I bloody hate Xenon lights. not when they're overtaking me mind, but they blind me something horrid when they're in the opposite lane. I tend to bring my biking glasses with me when I drive at night now, because they have yellow lenses and take a bit of the edge off :/

On overtaking on a sigle carriage way i tend not to bother if the other car is do 50 in a 60 but at 30 i would and see nothing wrong with it if its safe.

I hate slow drivers and think the police should make them re sit a test as you fail for not being confident enough to do the speed limit. But do not agree with the get rid of speed cameras follow the speed limit and they are not a problem. Moaning about them is like saying take cameras out of the bank so i can rob it with out being found out.

What do you mean "right hand lane"???

Your use of language gives you away sir! There is one lane for driving, and TWO overtaking lanes. No "right hand lane" exists...

Y'see. This seems VERY reasonable. Except that it isn't.

You just have to accept that human beings aren't going to follow the speed limits. Ever. As much as you tell them to and as reasonable a request it may be.

Once you accept that you'll see that speed cameras punish people for being human whilst not doing anything to stop road deaths: as evidenced by the government's own figures.

Tom - wanna jump in?? :)

Can't say I'm keen on them when I see them coming the other way, but they're standard, so whatareyagonnado?

If they're overly bright it could be that people are mistaking them for high-beams? that could atleast explain the strong reaction from people.

I hate 'em too, nothing worse than having someone with the worlds most powerful headlights coming towards you on a motorbike because it completely disorients you if you're not careful.

O well :)

I did understand it. I'm just in an argumentative mood today. My cat woke me up this morning by shitting on my neck, informing me that the vets drugs really aren't helping :eek7:

hmm, can you manipulate the angle of the lights from inside the car? I can do that in my Arosa, and angling the headlights down a notch could possibly help. Ofc, as you say the reactions are just happening on this particular bit of road, and if your lights were getting mistaken for high-beams you'd be getting the reaction everywhere.

heh, in that case get a LED panel installed in your rear window that flashes STFU N00B when you press a button on your steering wheel because I can find no fault in your behaviour ;)

This is England, we drive on the LEFT. The other two lanes on a motorway are for OVERTAKING.

There's not a middle lane for middle speed and a fast lane for fast speed.
My god, somebody who knows something about driving...

it makes me laugh when people get on the moral high horse about things on this forum. How many of you break the speed limit on a daily basis? Just because you think the speed limits are wrong, and your judgement makes you chose a better speed does not make it right

Right, we're bad but you can compare bank robbery to speeding. Actually you're right. Except you got the context wrong.

Speeding is an excuse for the government to rob the people.

Where do i mention bank robbery? i merely sit in the middle lane when its empty.

And speeding is not just about rob people. I see so many flowers by the sides of roads every single day

I can't say this has ever happened to me. I have seen it a few times though. Herne Bay sea front being a memorable one. Two twatty chavs in their cars. One starts crawling along so the other one pulls out to overtake and the other matches it's speed so it can neither overtake nor pull back in. With an innocent person coming towards them, they only just managed to avoid an accident.

I do this. But only when I am travelling at, or above, the speed limit, and the road is not safe to overtake on. For example, on a windy single lane road, doing 35 in a 30, if you start hassling me and try and overtake me, I will not allow you to (provided it is safe, obv). Some people need to learn the hard way that bullying tactics is not safe and will not get them what they want.

because undertaking is illegal
Actually, undertaking is only illegal in situations where it can be considered dangerous or careless/inconsiderate.

There's nothing in the road traffic act or highway code that says you can't undertake if someone is just cruising in another lane without overtaking anyone.

Changing down a lane to undertake, would probably be looked upon as an offence, but if you are already in the left most lane and 'undertake' someone in a safe manner, then it is them at fault and not you.

Actually, the highway code does state that the ONLY time it is acceptable to "undertake" is when the traffic in the outside lane is moving slower than the speed limit.

I regularly try to overtake, my usual route home on a friday means leaving the M6 early as it decides to shit up between Stoke & Manchester, so I take lots of nice country roads. I know the road fairly well, but as I only have Punto (it is at least a 1.9TD) I often have to work out where to overtake so I can get right behind them and take max use of my cars acceleration out of a corner. The amount of people who like to just trundle along at 40 in a national is ridiculous, but it's great fun overtaking A4's & BMWs :)

Sometimes on my drive down to work on a Monday I get bored and leave the M40 and drive the roads around Henley, they're also good for overtaking in places, it's amazing how many people don't overtake though :(

So you're making an already dangerous situation more dangerous? Well done. Its not your job to teach other drivers a lesson. Even if they're being a knob, two cars in motion isn't the environment to start giving out road safety advice.
