We're seriously considering putting up one of those lights. Is anyone able to shed any light (sic) on the laws regarding where we can point the light and how far from the house it can be triggered etc?

As they're considered a deterrent to theifs etc i dont think youll have a problem with laws etc as long as its mounted on your property

go do it matey. with luck, your neighbors will copycat you. be sure to tell them what you're doing! remember to get a mesh or cage to protect the light and the sensor. also...be aware that there may be some drilling of walls involved, as you don't really want any external wire that the shits can reach/cut.

as said above, some sensors have a pretty decent range, so I suppose you can get one covering the whole front of your house, best to talk to a specialist lighting person about that. not to buy from, but to get a good idea what you should get. in fact, tell someone why you're doing it and they will prolly give extra good advice.

Be sure that the light does not hit any of the houses - you don't want to be keeping people awake at night because its partly shining through their curtains.

Get a light that has a shade - makes it easier to do the above.

Oh, don't touch the bulb when installing it - if you do, wipe with a cloth - grease on the glass can reduce the lifespan of the bulb.

Keep a log of any activitely, dates, times e.t.c keep a log of problems and this can be used in a court of law at a later date.

Someone mentioned telling neigbours what you are doing, I'd go a step further and contact them all. Always strength in numbers and if you all band together you'll have a better chance at nailing the scum?

you need to form an action group, i guess, involving all the neighbours and even the police to come up with ideas on how to tackle this. This way you can discuss things like putting up security lights and get there feelings on it. That way you dont risk upsetting anybody when you put it up. Also the more people you involve the bigger the voice and it will be more likely that something will be done. Write to the council and your local MP as a group and go to the press etc etc, make as much noise as possible and someone will do something. In the mean time just document any events and get as much evidence as possible (pictures etc) hope this helps.

Try putting a sign in your window saying "Warning Video Surveilance in Effect Due to Vadlaism"

Then just get a fake camera box (look on google tons of fake cameras - some even move n stuff) mount that on a wall or pole in the garden.

I feel for you, when kids do this I wonder if they realise how annoying they would find it if someone were to do it to their prized possessions. It makes you want to cut up their trainers or something - little spud spankers.

Worrying thing is, even if you catch them - you can't touch them or it's assault and you'll be the one in jail.

It's nucking futs the way we pander to obnoxious little nobends in this country

Thing is, I've done all this before. Wheels turn, it all calms down, gets better, the people sent to make it secure wander off to new and more troubled pastures, and lo and behold, it all starts up again. I don't think anything ever gets solved, just temporarily relocated. I have got in touch with the local papers, and no joy so far. Most people locally don't want to get involved because they don't want the attention.

All this is such a shame as I remember you 2 being really happy in your last house. I remember how pissed off you both were when the landlady decided she wouldn't sell it.

All this is shit.

On a side note, a prick almost ran me and my 2 dogs over this morning because he decided he didn't want to indicate. I stood in front of his 4x4 and made him stop, I then said "try fucking indicating" and he did the swirly finger motion to the side of his head like I was mad/in the wrong. Anyways him doing that was the wrong thing to do on a Monday morning to a Trem with migraine, I totally flipped....I mean I went apeshit, I walked up to his side window and he bottled it and drove off.

Anyway, the moral of this is(quoting RATM) anger is a gift, use it, fight fucking back, why should we always curl up and die, why in this country are we expected to take everything up the arse?

Man, I am still angry about all this you 2 are having, and apart from on here and BW I barely know either of you, but it still really FUCKING ANNOYS ME

Some idiot has decided to start spitting on my car. I'm livid. I think its kids, and I want to catch and frighten the living daylights out of them.

So I plan to monitor and record it all with a webcam connected to the computer, and some software that records stuff. Obviously it will be rubbish at night, but I'm hoping they're doing it during the day.

Kenny, did you ever use such things? BTW is the car ok now?

"Active Webcam" is the one I use. Nothing much has happened to the car since they burnt the wing mirror some months ago.

The app is fairly resource hungry depending on what settings you use. It lets you block off areas to ignore and also you can set a trigger for a %age change threshold.

It can upload to an FTP sequentially or even archive up to a certain point before it overwrites (or not if you choose), it can record with or without sound etc etc. It's damn good software tbh and can even timestamp or custom stamp each frame. The only problem I have with it really is that if you use it's own custom format for writing video it's very HDD hungry but if you use MPEG, it can spend 30 seconds or more writing to disk and thus miss the start of another recording if it detects motion during that time.

I may be wrong, but I'm sure webcams pick up infra red (it's just filtered by the lens or something). Get a bunch of infra red LEDs and 'shine' them on your car at night (cost nothing to run) and get the webcam to pick it up. I read about it somewhere a while ago, I dare say google is more helpful.

You're right actually. I forgot this but it's very true. You can even test it by pointing a remote control at your webcam. The webcam will see the led light up but you won't be able to if you look at it with your eyes.

Another big gob of spit on the door while I was away working today, so that means they're doing it during the day. Good, all the better for getting a good still of their faces.

I'm just going to connect it up and leave it recording permanently.

Well, our garage has been broken into - the lock cut away, and the handle bent in such a way that I can't get in to see what is stolen.

But don't worry though - the police are sending me a FORM to fill in for when I can finally get inside to see what is stolen.

A FORM.

Sorry to hear that, Damini. I feel sorry for you and Kenny, seems to happen to you alot :(
A form...it'll just get thrown into a pile anyway. Take things into your own hands is what I say, only way the little nobheads will learn. Something seriously needs to be done about these kinds of people tbh, even if they do get caught, 9x10 they will only get a slap on the wrist anyway. Justice system in this country is a joke in some places, you get caught stealing...your fingers get lobbed off, they should bring that here.
