Im going to University this year, if I setup a forum about the university and people join and chat etc, just like freddyshouse is for games but for a university, where do I stand legally on the issue?

I've heard of another forum (which is now pretty inactive), where the university have tried to get the site closed because they couldn't moderate what was on it..

Thoughts?

You can do whatever you like, so long as nothing libellous is written.

If you use university logos etc. they can stop you under copyright, but otherwise you're ok provided you make its unofficial nature clear. I can't see why you're bothering though, everyone will use Facebook anyway.

They could potentially throw you out if you bring the university into disrepute through your actions and if they know you are behind the site they might also be able to get you on Intellectual Property as most unis will get you to sign over all the IP you produce whilst there, irrespective of whether it's to do with your course or not or if you produce stuff at uni or at home, etc. Never knew how enforcable that was though.

Have fun swimming to university.

Haha :D The student accommodation was window high in water, hopefully its less wet there now.

Thanks for the help guys. Is there anything against using the words "University of Hull" in the title or is it just a safer option to use "Hull University" and have a disclaimer in the footer saying its not connected with the University of Hull?

We need to make sure our backs are covered.

Why not say "Universities of Hull"

That way you can get sued by all the educational institutions at once!
