The Future of online gaming providers.

What does everybody think? In light of Wireplay and the troubles with BW (plus banner ads doing cr*p, so there's no ad revenue) do you think we'll end up paying for access to services like BW and if so how much will we be paying? Personally I think we will it's just a case of when as Im sure the first one to do it will take a hit as we all search for other providers until they are pay to use. I'd pay a fiver a month but it would have to be cheat free!

Just playing devil's advocate.

Does this mean p2p is the way to go?

I seriously doubt it.

NGUK are indeed going pay to play. I think their existence will be even more shortlived than last time.

I know some people will pay, but I think most won't want to.

Internet access is still too expensive in this country for most people to want to shell out even more for online gaming. Yes, unmetered access for dial ups has dropped dramatically, but gaming on 56k modems is so poor that most people certainly won't think it worth paying for.

Certain Broadband connections are still very expensive, and I'm thinking of ISDN and ADSL here. £40 per month is a lot of money to pay out, and I'm quite positive again that most people will simply balk at the idea of paying even more on top of that to connect to a games server.

Even if all the major Gaming ISPS go pay to play, there will always remain free servers somewhere on the net for people to play on. Why pay when you can get it for free?

Will we pay for cheat free quality servers? Most GISPs can't keep the servers cheat free at the moment. What will change with pay per play? Admins on the servers at all times? Hardly likely.

What is the solution then to the problem? I just don't know. I get the sneaking suspicion that the Companies who make the games should be pumping some of the money back into the online side of things. Isn't this what Westwood and Novalogic do? They make the games, you buy them, they get the money and then they use that money to run servers for you to play the game on. They use the Online Gaming side of things as a tool to get you to buy the game, so it's only fair that they pump some of that money back into it and provide some servers for people to use.

I firmly believe that pay per play will be a disaster for GISPs and they will come out of it with all sorts of egg on their faces. I certainly hope so.

Err, where exactly you think that your going to be able to play for free like? If barrys goes P2P, the only place left I can think of is Jolt. How long you seriously think that companies can afford to run 12thousand quid a year T1 lines without financial support?
In life you get what you pay for. Good broadband connects come at a price, as does 24/7 56k access.
The business model works for things like Everquest, it can work for something like Barrysworld too.

Personally, I'm looking forward to P2P, it will be goodbye to the 13yo "leet 0wn4g3" possie, hello to paid admins (tho I must stand up here and say how impressed I've been in recient weeks with the Barrys admins - those guys rule), and well organised events. Looks like a good future to me.

Nguk p2p, lol

i think i would only pay to play on barrys/demon to be honest, i have played jolt and Nguk, but sorry they both suck.

well the only way to go p2p is if all the servers got together and did it, imagine Nguk charging say £5-10 a month to play on there servers, Barrys, demon & jolt still free, hmmm wonder what people would do.

how could you inforce this? would servers be passworded?

all this would take was someone to throw there passsword around to all there m8s or one clan memeber pay and then give the rest of the clan there pass, and so on.

guess we will have to wait and see :)

My view is that p2p is ok provided you get a good, fast service and the servers are free of cheating fuckwits who masturbate over Lara Croft (the computer version, not Angelina Jolie) and haven't started shaving yet (I really hate cheats btw).

This is almost impossible, so thats that I suppose. The other side of the coin is that, as already mentioned, net access in this country is grossly overpriced and under spec'd so you dont get what you pay for in the first place so why pay extra?

Although I get on fine with my 56k modem (apart from downloading patches which get bigger every fucking upgrade), broadband in Britain is a fucking joke (we are ahead of only China in the world Braodband rollout stakes for christs sake) and BT have no intention of giving up their monopoly position despite the fact we paid for the telephone infrastructure in this country.

When they went private they took the network with them.
And now they charge US for it each month.
Thanks a lot.
:upyours:

So there you go. Unless broadband becomes a: cheaper and b: actually available then p2p will be a neccessary evil at best or dead in the water at worst.

you dont have to play on GSP's servers.

back at the start of the year, i used to play on a great server, run independantly. and i still play TFC on tons of independant servers. these servers are often ran off people#'s work lines, or off rich people's uber-1337 broadband lines, and often have better players than on the big GSPs.

Why is it that whenever we have a thread about this everyone decides to write paragraphs and paragraphs about it?

I know that some peeps at BW were making a games browser a while ago :)

Now that would be interesting. It seems though that GameSpy the only serious contender (commercially - before anyone flames for the various IRC / CS add ons) has resorted to very heavy ad based revenue which aint going to last. Though if they tied the browser to a method of controlling access to a p2p network then it could get very interesting.

It cant be long before Electronic Boutique change things at BW because they still are running things exactly as before, which got them into financial trouble in the first place.

What planet are you on, Gamespy costs $20 unless your a freeloader that don't pay for their software, in which case the adverts are yours to deal with :(

Even BY fear to go the full hog with P2P. Only offering clan games and server booking as an option to their subscribers.

Where are the subs only servers? Probably not an option at the moment due to the small take up on a paying service. The same problem anyone will face when setting up a P2P service - its got to be BETTER than the pubs servers...
