ok after ages trying to download cs to no avail i finally went out today and bought the retail version.
i then patched halflife to 1.6
i then patched cs to 1.1
i then downloaded the map pack.
hurrah i thinks, now to play the game! oh no.every time i connect to any server it says do not have the map,will download from the server , then your dll. is not the same as the servers.disconnect.
any ideas anyone?

Reinstall the retail version, use the patch for the retail version, then it will work. You are probably using the wrong patch.

ok reinstalled c.s downloaded the retail (boxed) patch to 1.1
half life is 1.06
the error message is :
cant register variable vgui_emulatemouse,already defined
change game to counterstrike
couldn't find map maps/de_vertigo.bsp,server will download
your .dll (ll.dlls\client .dll) differs ....
i definatley have de_vertigo in the cs folder.
any ideas?? or will i play q2 for the rest of my life...

Okay delete everything in your CS/HL folders.

Right let me get this right u have hlaf life, and u bought the CS retail?

If that is correct then you have Cs retail whcih is standalone it does not require HL installed. YOu only need the patches for the reatil version NOTHING else. Read what it says about upgrading from the retail version at http://www.counter-strike.net
OKay you should be able to play CS now, you may need some map/weapon name packs to play on most servers you can grab a good one over at http://www.nextwish.org
my suggestion however is that if you already have half life is to d/l the cs1.1 full version (and HL 1.0.1.6), or find a friend how has it on Cd or something. Use a program like gozilla or getright so u can do the d/l over time without having to start again. THis way u have all maps, and original weapon names. Then get a refund on the Cs retail version you bought.

the reason i bought the retail version was because of problems downloading the mod version.
i now have the retail version with the retail (out of the box,as it says on the game guide on bw) with a retail ( out of the...ditto) patch to `1.1.
surely the fact that half life is installed id niether here nor there.i want it installed so i can play the game...
so... it is patched to 1.1 (for certain ) i dont want the d/l version and i dont care about the 15 quid. i just want to connect to a server.
if theres some reason to remove h-l pls tell then i'll do it.

I said to uninstall the others because i dont know exactly what you rsystem si like or where u have installed the files. So starting form clean is a good idea. You probably have corrupt files.

Why are u patching and installing HL if you have the retail CS, you can use all the mods with the retail CS. So u dont need the 1.1.06 patch.

AS i said if you have problems downloading use a bloody download manager.

well i removed all sierra file.as u say c.s is 360 mb so is obvioulsy stand alone.however now gamespy says "cannot find half-life" when i try to connect.
bloody hell...

Because you have to point gamespy to the location of your Cs standalone install.

Go to options and find half life, you need to change the path to match your new install directory. You also need to change the name of the executable file, obviously its no longer Hl.exe -I cant actually remember what it is, and no one will tell me. I hope that made sense, if not pop into #barrysworld and ask someone they should know.

well finally sorted it ,got to c.s tonight! thanks very much for ur help ch3tan ,incidently i do use a d/l program but it still went wrong like 5 or 6 times at 60 mb. very annoying lol
video seems a little dark to me,even with things turned up, i use a gf2 mx is this a normal thing like on q2? on that i turn up the gamma on the vid card to compensate.
btw kornholio, good advice but it is a new comp so id be wasting me time

Colour problems can usually be solved by using a monitor colour profile and the latest detonator drivers. If they are not u can save a colour profile in the det 3 control panal specially for CS.
