The Cost of War?

The news reports say a thousand Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired last night - they cost $600,000 each so thats 600 million dollars just for last nights missiles!!

Modern war is certainly not cheap - still if I had a few hundred thousand handy it could be fun owning your own cruise missile- good for scaring the neighbours...

Well the first night saw 320 launched = $192m

Its not only modern war that isn't cheap, World War 2

Most Costly War
The material cost of World War II far transcended that of the rest of history's wars put together, and has been estimated at $1.5 trillion.

plus a hell of a lot more in lives, 56+ million.

The Tomahawk missle is cheaper than it used to be but the fact is that if cheaper methods were used the cost in lives would be more and thus the whole war would risk failure.

Just an interesting article about the cost of war over at the BBC,

Everyone knows it's expensive, but does it really need it's own thread topic?

Emb, my son has that plane (yr avatar) on a Top Trump card. He's quite enjoying seeing what planes are being used in the war.

I had a pack of Top Trumps featuring the SR71 25 years ago!

IIRC it was the card to have. Well that and the Galaxy, between them they had all the categories sown up.

Also I'm pretty sure that the OEM Tomahawks are quite a lot cheaper than the retail ones, they just don't come in a nice box.

As long as they have the correct drivers ------ Don't want them getting to Baghdad and then getting a fatal protection error.

I couldn't remember how many of those B52s had been built, hence the search, it turns out 744 B52s were built with about only 50 operational now and to prove how effective it is the current service life has been extended to 2040, come 2040 it will be 85 years old...fairly amazing.

..

<my one and only war contribution>

It's past time that war became more personal and fair - Allied host & Iraqi host all armed with melee weapons meeting on a big fuck off field... cost fuck all really in materials, and providing you have even numbers - totally fair.

bet wanker americans wouldn't be so eager to go to war if they risked having their head caved in with a mace.

Thats why its getting so much like a remote war, these unmanned drones we hear about are the start--with the "batplane?" remotely operated fighter jet in development, war could be fought from a desk.

Americas Army.
The last starfighter.

Are somethings that just strang to mind here.. :)

Probably the cost of lives is the highest cost of all.

From Sky News...

Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced Britain's budget for the Iraq war will be boosted to £3bn, up from £1.75bn.

It comes just days after President Bush asked US Congress for an additional £47bn to fund the war effort.
