LCD Displays

How do,

I'm looking for a *reasonable* LCD display for my Dad. He wants a 19", and doesn't play games or do anything that would require fast response times or whatever it is that's relevant in LCD displays.

Just wanted to know what people think I should be looking out for (specs wise) and how much I need to be spending in order to get something pretty decent. The cheaper the better obviously, but I don't want to get him something crap that will die in a year or two.

Thanks in advance,

Nath

Something to bear in mind,

I got a 19" TFT for my mum and dad to use and the native res is 1280*1024. However, some 19" TFTs have a native res of 1600*1200 which for them (tried this on the old monitor) made things to hard to see/read with their poor elderly (mid fifties, heh) eyesight.

You might wanna demo such a thing to your dad to make sure it's fit for his needs.

Ive got an AOC LM929 which would pretty perfect for your pop.

Its 1280*1024, integrated (admitedly pretty poor) speakers and reasonably priced .

Actually, its a damn fine monitor. Height adjustable, tilt and swivel and spins through 90deg for portrait/landscape view. DVI and VGA.

Cheers guys.

£400 isn't unreasonable for a 19" TFT, there is a Samsung for low £300's available though.

What's your budget Nath?

A lot of 19 inch monitors are 1280x768. Why not just got for a 17" one of the same resolution?

Fair point Clown, but my Mum whos eyesight is pretty bad benefits from a 1280*1024 res on a big screen as opposed on a slightly smaller screen.

However, if eyesight isn't a big deal, then a 17" 1280*1024 panel would probably be better than a 19" 1280*1024 panel from a cost-saving perspective - so you're probably right Clown.

Yeah G, 400 is reasonable - it's just a lot of money. This is a prezzy for my dad so I don't really want to spend a great deal more than 200-300 quid.

Clown, my dads eyesight is not at it's best so a 19" doing 1280 res is going to be better than a 17" doing the same since the 19" will display stuffé bigger.

I'd recommend an LG panel too. Good picture, no ghosting, no dead pixels for me.

19" Arianet Premium-Plus TFT Silver

£199.95 exc, £234.94 inc.

Stock code : MON-TFT-A-V19S

http://www.aria.co.uk/specials.asp

Prolly the best tft that you'll get for the money. It's only got a 25ms response time which ain't great but then if you don't want it for gaming that isn't an issue.

I have a 17" version which is 16ms and that's very nice too (£175 incl vat).

Well worth a look imo

Id say dont bother with 19" moniters.

Sitting close up to them your not gonna be able to view it as " easily" as a 17" and for the saving in money you gain ALOT of quality.

for example

samtron moniters at the moment going for about £139ish look stylish and are great for photo editing etc etc

if you really push the boat out go illayma as they garantee no dead pixles.

Thanks a lot for all the replies, lots of good stuff to go on here.

Looking for TFT for gaming, native res 1280x1024

Right i've just bought a 6800GT and planning to upgrade cpu to a AMD64 3500+ so all what I need now is a decent monitor. Want a nice thin TFT so it doesn't take up all my desk unlike my current chunky monitor.

What sorta specs should I be looking at and what manufacturers/models are recommended? Anyone with a TFT wana give their opinions on their screen?

Try and find the LG1710B. They should be going cheap if you can find one because LG have discontinued making them. 16ms response time, and no ghosting to my eye. Dual input (VGA and DVI, you can switch between the two) and did I say it was cheap?

Just got myself a Benq TFT 17" FP767-12 and having just swapped from CRT i gotta say its very nice. 12 ms response, really good for gaming (HL2 and RO) and damned cheap if you shop around, has no dvi but apparently not worth the extra unless your into CAD etc. I couldnt see the difference anyway.

I'm after an LCD screen meself, although as a television rather than a PC monitor, been looking around and almost settled on a philips brand 23" mojo, just one thing is niggling me about it.

The screen has a 25ms response time, considering this is going to be used purely as a television set would that be sufficient? Bare in mind the only real use it'll have is playing DVDs.

note: Plumping for the 23" rather than the much cheaper 17" because i'll be sat a good 6 feet away from it, although if common sense prevails I may look to alternatives.

Hrm, interesting, althought the price is even more wallet-raiding than the TV set :p

(ps, i'm using a standalone DVD player, not one running from the PC)

Just a quick question, how much does Pixel Plus improve the quality of an image, and is it worth paying the extra money for an LCD TV?

As i say i got the monitor today, its a pain in the arse to set it up for many reasons. The first was i went into Safemode because the monitor wouldnt come on after loading the XP logo.

Removed the Geforce drivers and it all loaded up easily, thought i wouldnt get any problems then, but when i looked on some websites i noticed the fonts looked a bit more "bolder" than some of the other characters. I thought "ahh must be because i dont have the drivers yet".

I checked the box and it didnt have the CD, so i thought not too much of a problem, can go on their website and download them. I found there isnt an .exe download, just .zip. At the time it didnt bug me as on all the other occasions it was simple.

Downloaded, found the files i needed, and went to the Display options, and clicked on the monitor tab, but it was selected as "Default Monitor" but "Properties" was blanked out, so i cant install the monitor drivers.

Gah. ffs :/

/edit

EXACTLY like this problem
