Ok so it's that time of year again where i get to spoil myself and im looking to buy a swanky new mp3 player. I used to have a Creative Zen Vision: M until i stupidly lost it when pissed. It was great and i'm tempted to simply buy another one but i was wondering if there's anything new and superior? I'm not particularly a fan of ipods since i dont like paying for the ipod label when it's an inferior product.

anyone recommend something?

I wasn't a fan of Ipods either, but I bought one a month or two ago because of the nike running kit, and I cant say that I've regretted it.

Stick with creative if i was you, don't even consider a bloatware ridden spybot like I-pod.

Creative Zen 8gb - Ebuyer makes I-Pod look like the overpriced pile of shit that it is :)

i used to have an iriver h320, they were great (if a little bulky), but i'm not sure what the newer models are like.

i now have a creative zen vision m, as you had, and i have to say i couldn't be happier with it. as has been said, ipods are a huge waste of money.

another thing i would say is that i would strongly advise getting some good (£50+ sennheisers or something) over the head headphones along with it - if you don't already, of course - the quality difference really is astounding. it baffles me when people walk around with their £200 ipods or whatever, with those horrid in-ear earphones that make the music sound like shit! open back headphones always have better bass response, as well, but they are a little obnoxious if you use public transport a lot or use them in a quiet environment often (for obvious reasons).

it depends on what you are going to do with it. If it's for music only, then the Creative Zen is indeed a better choice :)

Although its more along the lines of a ipod nano its a truely sexy beast and works like a usb stick rather than all that i tunes shite.

You also get an sd expansion card slot to boost the 8gb memory if necessary.

The official leather case looks really smart too.

Superior to i pod in all ways apart from fashion kudos

that looks alright, bit small though, my current music library is already 28gb.

Oooh, looks like there are 30 and 60gb versions, bit pricey though :)

well the video display and battery life are superior on the creative players too, as far as i'm aware. the video quality i can certainly vouch for, but i don't honestly know the facts and figures on the battery life - i just seem to remember reading the creative players have better battery life.

In all honesty i've yet to see anything advantageuos about the ipod except the vast amount accessories.

Ipods aren't necessarily shit but in effect you're paying more for a brand.

I got an Archos 4GB mp3 player for about £72 when the Ipod 4 GB's were trailing at £130-140. They both offered the same, just one was nearly double the price of the other.

I don't see peoples problems with iPods, they used to be overpriced and have major flaws but now they're at a decent price and very reliable. £130 for an 8gb nano which I bought a few months ago, and £160 for an 80gb 'classic'. Hardly overpriced.

Well my problem with it is you get all the DRM crap and all the shitty little programs that run in the background on your PC.

ive been thinking about getting a new MP3, been looking at the creative and also the Sony NWZ-A818, both seem to get good reviews. Not sure what other peoples opinion on the sony is though.

The ipod has way more adventages when doing sports etc. That's also what I bought mine for.

If it was going to be used on the bus from/to work, then sure, go for the Creative Zen.

Used to always buy Creative, great products. Last Xmas got the wife a Pink nano and have to say it was a good product although I still hate iTunes bloatware.

Having to use Ipod's now as we are integrating them with our systems on aircraft. But at least its a freebie. Soon you will be able to download Podcasts whilst flying on airlines like Singapore, Emirates, Quantas and Qatar with many more to follow. Or even listen to your iPod or watch movies/video on it through the aircraft In-Seat Video System.

Ipods are not good, the harddisks inside them spin, which means they are more likely to break. Piece of shit really. the only ones that don't have a spinning disk is the shuffle things afiak? and the ones w/o a screen?

you'd be surprised, to be honest, does it sound like your hd spins in your pc? no, so you cant exactly hear it, or feel it, and they can be very tiny :D

"The nano uses flash memory, like the iPod shuffle, but with a miniaturized version of the display screen and "click wheel" found on the iPod classic."

Not to say that wiki is 100% right about anything, but...
