Well i'd say Sonic for the pure cool factor.

Sonic is undoubtably cooler than Mario.
As for who is the "best", it's a tough call.
Mario brought me many many hours of joyess cartoonism and days of gaming on teh gameboy (O M G, i miss playing mario on gameboy btw)

/agree, Sonic is way and above far more cooler than Mario! They're not even in the same league in terms of coolness, maybe sales figures, not coolness!

solid snake isn't the mascot of any console, except arguably Playstation, though i would argue Tekkan is/was

and anywho, according to wikipedia
EU release date, Metal Gear, March 1989
EU release date, Donkey Kong(mario is the guy that does the jumping btw), October 15th 1986

and thats release dates for the NES, donkey kong was in the arcades in '81

I still am not on the same page about the "good fighter" thing, but, yes...mario would make a better "mascot" that snake could kick around

I know you guys are mostly sNES fainbois, because being seen as retro is to be e-cool these days, but you all seem to be forgetting Super Mario on the Nitendo 64. That blew anything on the NES out the window, fuck your "oohhhh but the graphics were shit so it must have been a better game really and didn't rely on graphics". The N64 was the best console ever. Mario on that beat anything Sonic has done, and anything snake did for the NES or the PSX.

Better games... better tv/film adaptation...

Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast is one of the best games i have ever played.. staggering amounts of content in it.

and then you have the boys who made sonic.... Sonic Team.. responsible for such stunning games as phantasy star online/universe, Shining Force..
