I caught a bit of it after watching the end of Hellraiser, I found Hellraiser surprisingly more disturbing :)

I would have watched the end, but I couldn't be arsed and ended up watching something else... I think. I should have watched it tbh, I imagine it would be pretty interesting. I saw the bit when he pulled the brain out of the skull and it just looked like... well, a brain. I'm not at all squeamish thankfully, but I couldn't imagine prodding someones insides about. I was shocked to see how much they struggled lifting the corpses internal organs out, looked pretty heavy. Kind of surprising considering we carry it around with us without much thought.

Anyway, I have absolutely no problems with public autopsies like that so long as it's in the name of science and not morbid entertainment. Hopefully, it will have given some people that vital nudge towards becoming a doctor now they know a bit more about the insides of a dead person.

throd: No, I'm quite happy being an anonymous twat. There are a couple here who've seen my photograph, and they'd be sure to vouch for my immaturity or rancid features - whichever - as thats clearly what you're fishing for. I'm not entirely sure it comes into play here, though.

I'm sure that a more educational tone could have been brought to the program and despite what anyone says, the fact it was shown on television kinda makes it entertainment.

At the end of the day though, the dead guy wasn't giving a shit so why should we?

Death is too taboo (as Damini said earlier) and we would probably come to terms with it better if we were more exposed to it in all it's forms.

I personally don't care what is shown on television, if I don't want to see something I wont watch it. Everyone has this option and should really worry about their own lives more.

I was quite disappointed with it. No blood and they cut away during the juicy bits.

Indeed they were.
They supplied bodies for autopsies, not dissimilar to the one we are talking about.

First it was a magician, now it's a victorian doctor...

fyi, he was wearing a standard lab-coat, and a wide brimmed black hat, of the style that was traditionally worn by the forebears of forensic pathology. Nothing particularly offensive about it. He was even asked "do you not think it would be respectful to take your hat off" and replied with something along the lines of "it's to show respect to my profession that I wear it", to which everyone clapped.

I think the point Wazz was making (which this, imo, ably demonstrates), is that you can hardly make judgements about the programme's validity when you didn't even watch it, and don't even know a great deal about it. Take it as a personal dig if you want, I'm not arsed.

There's a fundamental problem with saying that anything shown on a television is "entertainment". The news is seldom entertainment, unless you consider continued bloodshed around the World as such.

I didn't catch this programme but from reviews I have subsequently read I am under the impression it was conducted very professionally. I don't personally see how this is in any way different to pornography being shown on television - people have very strong views against this, yet it has been on our screens for years (so Im told). You can't dismiss this, or indeed pornography on our screens simply because you happen to find it distasteful, or - more arrogantly - are superimposing your viewpoints as that of "teh nation".

Given the choice between abject censorship of our media and having programmes such as this broadcasted, whether I like them or not, I'd choose the latter every time. We're a much better nation culturally for it.

there is a slight difference between the news and a full blown documentary though.
Myself, I wouldn't have watched it even if I could get Ch4. I have a huge curiosity of just about everything, but watching the dissection of any type of animal makes me want to dabble in projectile vomiting.

Durzel, fair point you have made, though I dont believe its usual on the news to show the bodies of crime victims or whatever. Perhaps Stu could read your post a few times, he may learn the difference between making a valid point and arguing for the sake of it. Though i doubt it tbh :rolleyes:
Tdc, Im with you m8, cant think of anything I'd rather watch less :)

Its the same with pornography. Everyone up in arms cos its on TV. I always thought that TV comes with either an on/off button or a channel changer.

If you dont want to watch it, DONT.
