Hi all
I was wondering if I could get a bit of advice from those of you who have been in the army(I've heard a few say they have).
I've just been passed medically and am coming up to my interview in a couple of weeks, where I'm expected to know a bit about what it is I want to do.
I've been reading the "army rumour service" forum quite a while, and seem to find hundreds of conflicting versions of what actually happens when it comes to job selection.
I'm certain about my first choice - the Parachute Regiment - I've read up on this and believe that I know enough about it, however my second/third choices - Special Observer/OP assistant - don't seem as straight forward.
I understand competition will be quite high for these jobs, and I've heard several different versions of what happens - some say you can go straight in as an observer, others say that you need to put some time in with a standard artillery battery first before you can go onto be an observer. Some people have said that it depends how lucky you are as to whether you get assigned to where you want to go, but if they decide you're going somewhere else then that's what happens.
As some may guess from my choices I'm aiming for light/specialised infantry. What I'm concerned about is that I'll go in wanting to do the Observer/Recon bit, but end up on one of the big guns doing something quite different.
I'm not really sure who to believe, but seeing as its a fairly major choice, I thought it might be best to ask a direct question - if it turns out that I'm more likely to end up on an artillery piece than where I actually want to go then I might end up revising my choices. I've talked to my recruiter but to be honest I've learnt to take what they say with a rather large pinch of salt.
Also, while I'm at it, does anyone know what day to day(non-operational) life is like in a standard infantry regiment? I've heard what its like in the support regiments, where its basically like a 9 to 5 in green, but I've not heard what squaddies get up to on a standard day, alot of PT/drill i would imagine, but what else?
Any help much appreciated!
