American football = kids version of Rugby (Rules: breaks every 10 minutes, after throwing the ball you can run for several metres before stopping, as it is a kids sport you must wear extensive shoulder pads, bum cheek pads, tackle protector, full motorcycle helmet with full face guard. Finally your team members are allowed to obstruct and hold hands when trying to prevent the other team from touching the rugby ball.

NB. Some of the above might be incorrect but the premise is the same, American Football = fucking shit game designed for 4 year olds.

Rugby for girls tbh ;)

Liked it for about a year whilst at uni (the year Mansell won the indy 500 when, unbeknownst to the authorities he was horribly injured and shouldn't have been driving) then realised it's actually crap.

But Trump is actually right here - America needs to come up with a different name for it. :)

Mansell never won the Indy 500...
Ah yes. He won the series, not that specific race. (I couldn't even remember it was called indycart :) )

Either way - he had about a 12" x 18" bit of his internal membrane torn and detached and had a tap inserted in his side. Before one of the races he had a litre and a half of fluid drained (in secret). Won the race. Hobbled to the victory stand. Hobbled to the pits and had another litre drained.

:)

His seeming inability to change style was highly annoying, but I think he was done for after his comments following the Everton game.

An average age in the team of 23 the other day, as well. All young players they've spent stupid money on and tied down to long contracts, very few senior players or leaders (Drogba, Lampard, Ivanovic, Terry, Essien, Cech etc) among them... they're a shadow of the team of a decade ago.

More tech fucking football up:

Wirtz was offside. Definitely. he said he was. And even the tech says he was - but because of the tech he gets the goal.

Most euopean leagues scrapped it because of this. But not us.

Liverpool should have stayed 1-0 down.

When you say "most European leagues scrapped it"... in your furious, VAR-hating head, which European leagues have scrapped it? Sweden never started using it in the first place and Norway voted to scrap it (but haven't actually done it yet)... I think referring to those 2 as "most European leagues" is slightly disingenuous. All of the "big" tier 1 European leagues (Germany, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium...) use VAR and they all use it for offsides as a standard part of a goal check so I don't know what you're referring to.

Not talking about "VAR" per se @caLLous - this is the "benefit of the doubt" shit given to the "semi automated offside technology" - the 5cm.

Most big european leagues have gotten rid of that 5cm benefit of the doubt for reasons like this one: 1) Wirtz was offside, 2) On field decision was correct - offside, 3) SAOT shows offside with old rules but 5cm "benefit of doubt" means when VAR check happens, the goal, that is offside, gets ruled onside - so correct on-field decision is overruled.

It's in the article I linked btw, if you care to read it.

It's so obvious this time because the offside coincides with the lines of grass on the pitch. You could see it obviously.

Other leagues, including the top flights in Germany, Spain and Italy, have gone back to offside by the millimetre.

But when the Premier League introduced SAOT it wanted to continue with the tolerance level, to give some leeway to the attacker. That is because there are still questions about treating this new technology as flawless.

It is also why you will get situations like Wirtz, who appears to be just offside, but SAOT will give him the benefit of the doubt

Wirtz himself said he was sure he was offside so he didn't celebrate. You can clearly see he's offside when you look. The on-field decision was correct.

But because "rules" an correctly-assessed offside goal gets ruled onside because of "benefit of the doubt".

Lol. Joke.

Oh, right, yeah. Yet another implementation own goal by the English authorities. I must confess I thought the human review part of the semi-automated thing was much stronger but they're so cowed by the rules that they can look at something they know is wrong and say it's right. I get that they're trying to bring consistency in (by force, via brittle rules, if necessary) and bringing subjectivity into it could just muddy it further but there have been all sorts of instances (usually with hand balls) where just a little bit of "no hang on, that's fucking stupid" should come into play. It's infuriating that they just switch their brains off because "rules".

Then, to add salt to the wound, PGMOL will come out in the days after and say "wow, we sure did get that one wrong". The whole point of VAR is that it's there to help humans come to an authoritative final decision, there shouldn't even need to be a review process.

I watch quite a bit of European football and you barely notice VAR. You notice the difference when the English teams play in Europe as well.

They appeared to be sort of on the up for once.

Hopefully the rot is too deep to fix.

And VAR is still shit and game breaking ;)
