I'd still disagree with you (it's only, ooh, 90% toffee nosed twats), but that was entirely Barton's point. Thuggish behaviour off the field from English rugby players is slap-on-the-wrist, tut-tut boys-will-be-boys stuff, because basically, they're posh. Football players on the other hand, get routinely crucified because a. they sell more newspapers, but b. because of their class (or lack of it).

If New Zealand or Irish players had behaved the way England's players did (in countries where Rugby is more popular and not quite as elitist) they'd have got a lot more stick than the English got from their media.

or cos rugby is only a recently profesional sport, and for some countries at the world cup it's still a hobby played by part time ametures, can't remember what country it was in the 2007 wc, may have been newzealand who's 2nd choice hooker couldn't get the time off work to play.

Actually most football players don't earn in a year what some footballers earn in a week. And some Rugby players earn quite a lot; there a quite a few playing in France (where the money is) on €1M+ deals before endorsements. Don't get as much in England because the salary cap is half what it is in France.

But all that's besides the point; Barton's comments were originally about players on international duty, and in that context its about showing up your country, not how much money you earn.
