Certainly much better value to be had. He will do a decent enough job in the league but will be lost when you make Europe again.

Nzogbia, cheaper, younger, better. Big mistake for Liverpool!

It's cause he is English, absolute shambles, what the hell is happening????????

But meh at least we finally signed a REAL wide midfielder :(

Though +1 for this stat :D
"
Downing completed more crosses in open play - 135 - than any other player in the Premier League last season. No other player has beaten that amount for any of the last three campaigns."

Yup I imagine that supply for Carroll is what they are looking at. We have laughed at Liverpool for never having recent wingers for years. Now they buy one and we still question it :p

I am not questioning the purchase, is a decent enough player really, just the price paid which I consider to be 40% more than his actual value.

Yup and we know he's not a top European player :p I do reckon he'll do a job, Carroll will have a consistent supply to get on the end of. Instead of carragher lobbing rockets from 80 yards.

Young was in the last 12 months of his contract, Downing has 2 years left. Makes a big difference. Downing was much more effective than Young last season too. Also £20m on Henderson kinda sets the bar.

Anyway is it official or just another rumour?

Well, if they managed to get 16m for Young I think 20m is ok ;)

May I ask what makes Young so much better than Downing?

And downing is almost exactly 1 year older.

How the fuck did they concede 3 goals against that team? oO

I think it also comes down to 30 degrees, 80% humidity and all goals conceded in overtime (1 in 45th minut and 2 passed 90th minutes). Actually all of their goals were really good football goals :)

The most interesting point was that Joe Cole looked really sharp! :p

Yeah it's official in that the bid has been accepted. Henderson was 16 million!!!!! and is far younger.

Downing has never been and will never be an international quality player. Liverpool are just looking for players to get them to 4th, so they can buy better once they are in the champions league.

Cole did look sharp, would be a like a new signing if Kenny can keep the lad fit, no doubting his talent either when he's got his game face on!

Yup it was inevitable, Reckon Chelsea will up the bid to about 33 million and Spurs will have to accept it. Fact is Spurs cannot spend until they sell, and no one wants the shite Harry is trying to peddle for over inflated prices based on his own opinion of them. They have a decent player in Kranjaer to fill the space he leaves, which will let them get a decent striker and maybe a defender.

I don't know about that. He has surprising pace, a wicked left foot and can score and create. He probably isn't top tier Champions League quality but he is one of our better international players.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know he has all of those things, I just don't think that world class defenders are that concerned when facing him. I'd much rather have Adam Johsnon, who is going to be a very good player!

Sorry that's no excuse. It was 37 degrees when Arsenal played Malaysia.

And their "really good football goals" would easily have been nullified by remotely competent defending.

It would have been something like 4-0 at HT if the ref was of PL standard as well, but lets ignore that ;)

edit: Nevermind, the PL refs are wank as well :p

Yep, it's the value of his contract that's set the price, not his skill or ability.

Redknapp does not know if the Croatian has submitted anything formally, but believes it is irrelevant anyway.

"We know he wants to leave, whether he writes it down on a piece of paper doesn't really make any difference to our stance," he told BBC Sport.

"He's a great player and we don't want to lose him."

Downing is an ok premier league player, nothing more. He could be better with better players around him, but he's not consistent enough. He's certainly not a international or Champs League regular, Young is turning into both those things. Contract values aside, Lollerpool have been robbed. well done to Villa though, great income for a player than can replace for less.

Yup, that's why I see Liverpool concentrating on getting into 4th before worrying about the next level.

Macheda and Owen both looked really good last night, could be an interesting season if we keep all our 6 strikers at the club. That is a lot of strength in depth in the squad.

How much does Redknapp love talking to the press? He should just become a fucking pundit and be done with it.

Boateng has left City for Bayern, didn't last long :d

Yep we are pretty damn strong up front, I just don't see how we keep all six happy.

Oh and the Macheda doubters, have a look at both of his goals last night, the guy is a natural finsher.

Well Owen I think will be happy as long as he get's games (even sub starts) when he's fit. I think he knows he is not a first choice. M Diouf probably isn't ready to feature much yet, but you never know - just look at Hernandez last year. Macheda looks like he's matured a lot, but there should be no pressure on him, he's only 19 still. Wellbeck had a great season last year, but will Sunderland be a draw for him? Getting more regular football at his age will be tempting. Then Rooney, Hernandez and Berba, hard to see anyone nudging them out if they are on form again this year.

His second goal was a peach of a finish. He hit it so quickly after his first touch that it might as well have been first time!
