The problem with avatars is that I do visualise the poster as looking like that.
Gremlin is in a white coat running away from a motorbike, TdC is and evil carebear, Mank does actually look like Bill Pulman, Xaviar has a double identity as Holly and Whipped is so fit from the miles and miles of walking as a floppy disk it's unreal.
... at least Summo looks like his...

I get confused when people change their avatars. I can recognise them quickly out the corner of my eye without having to read the name, so when someone changes their avatar I think they're a different person.
I like Summo's amazing evolving avatar though. I scanned mine from a CD cover and coloured it in

For those less artistic out there, here's how i made mine.
1) find a suitably funny video - mine is a piece from Monty Pythons trout slapping dance.
2) Find a small sequence that can either be looped or forward-backwards played (there is a word for it, but it evades me now).
I used Adobe Premiere for this.
3) crop the video segment and scale so it looks "ok" in the 50x50 avatar constraints.
4) save as a .gif sequence and load every other frame into your favourate gif animator. I used Uleads Gifanimator here)
5) dither, reduce the colour count and try to get a good repeat - i think i am just a few bytes under the 20k limit.
6) upload and look smug at all your hard work.
and there it is - I must thank Gremlin for the video sequence inspiration.
