That whole self-respect malarky.

I was wondering, why do people associate cleaning ones self, cutting hair, keeping a clean attire etc with self-respect?

I would think that if one respects him/herself, it doesn't require them to be, smell or look like something. If they respect themself, surely it's what self-respect is all about.

I'd call it mroe of an issue of other-respect to shower now and then, if non-showering didn't bother yourself.(example that).

Also self-esteem, why the hell do people measure their self-esteem based on what others think about them :eek6:

Just something to talk about.

Smelling like some tramp, that has 5 day old piss stained kegs on is not normal :p

I stay clean because being dirty stinks and I mean literally stinks.

dont think many really believes that so, well... whats the point?

Actually quite a few do.

Self-respect is measured via "clenliness" and people judge themselves via other peoples eyes, or their own standards in some cases.

And both things are personal.

Calaen, it's not nice to the people around, but it doesn't have to take away from self-respect.

I could not respect myself if I was a dirty tramp, me not washing would stop me from respecting myself because I would not be looking after myself, generally if you respect something you look after it, care for it.

Yeah I view self-respect partly in terms of self-image. Keeping myself well dressed, hair cut once a month to keep it in style, beard never too unruly, generally trimmed or shaved once a week. Keeping clean, showering everyday. These things make me feel better about myself, not smelling is also quite nice :p Also going to the gym, keeping myself generally healthy and in good shape.

First want to clarify; you're not wrong, there's nothing wrong in that way and it's most likely most people are like that, but in the spirit of discussion;

Do you think it would be possible for someone to feel equally good about themselves, even without such actions?

I just personally think that it's wrong to say, as a loose example; "this guy has no self-respect." when they only go by looks or smell.

And it seems to happen quite often, well, not by those words, but judgement passed in such spirit.

Yes obviously, these things are goverened by the scoiety /culture we are bought up in. If you live in a tribe in the middle of nowhere as an extreme example, your values of self-image and self-respect will be difference -maybe how good a hunter/gatherer you are.

I don't mind being a bit scummy tbh though i do brush my teeth without fail lol even when I was homeless I made sure I have me tooth brush (though its more because i have to taste my own morning breath if i dont brush and tbh that mings).

I always think its whats on the inside that matters and you can look as spruce and spiffy as you like but if your ashamed or not confident then it isn't really going to help that you sparkle when sunlight bounces off your hair.

Having said that though, its not a matter of self respect or anything but when I'm ill i always do feel better if I have a nice bath and get into some clean jimmyjams.

I judge people who I dont know on how they look, there is no other way to judge someone without knowing anyhting about them.
If I seen a bloke who looks like shit, is covered in shit, smells like shit, and is eating a shit sandwhich with shit stuck in his nails, then I would avoid him.

Thats how most people operate I reckon, so I try to maintain a half decent image. Try it, the better you look the better you get treated by random people.

Hmmm.. My attitude on this has changed recently. I DO actually think that looking good/presentable makes you feel better/gives you slightly more self respect.. I mean, if I'm a mess I'm quiet as hell and generally out of the way. But if I feel more ... presented ... I'm a lot happier I guess.

I find myself agreeing with Toht's point of view.
I have a shower maybe once a month.
I shave maybe once every 6-8 weeks.
My hair hasn't been cut in over 5 years.

Based on that description, you would probably think that I'm a disgusting filthy person who has no self-respect and who stinks. The reality is different and boring.

I forgot to mention that I *wash* regularly.
I wear ordinary antiperspirant.
I wear clean clothing (a shirt may get 2 days use if not too sweaty).
Long hair looks respectable if you tie it back for work. :)

Self-respect is based on how I feel about myself, and visual appearance isn't something that I worry about. As long as I'm doing my job and helping people get on with their ability to work, I'm happy.

lol actually thinking about it, i tend to be the other way and judge people who are over zealous about their appearance (i.e. that footballer from man u who everyone loves, ronaldo or girls who try t look like paris hilton i.e. yellow hair, orange skin, flourescent white nails) and generally I dismiss these people as "the generic ones" and give them no further thought.

Well once a month does sound kind of a long time, but the need to shower is individual too. He did say he washes regularly, just doesn't have a major scrubdown.

I shower maybe once a week and i don't smell worse then usual.

Then again i don't do heavy exercissle or have a job that requires me to roll around in the dirt.

I can't imagine not having a shower after being at work, or after waking up.

I get enough and again, all don't require the attention. You get different girls with groomed and ungroomed looks.

Jesus, I shower twice a day!

Live with a roomie who showers sometimes three times a day and showers before going to the shops.

Some people sweat more, get greasier faster etc.

Yes i am! :D

Just meant that others sweat more and others less, have dirtier jobs or activities.

If i played rugby, squash, ran etc, i'd wash after too. If only to get the smog off :ninja:

I might shower more if i move in with a woman....for...obvious...reasons.
