Thane Race/Weapon/Shield?

Hi guys, I'm considering making a Thane. I'd like to know your thoughts on the Race, Weapon type and whether it should use a Shield.

I know there isnt a 'best' but there must be a common template.


Also what spec should i go for?

50 Stormcalling
42 Shield
39 Weapon
6 Parry

Don't think anyone has it, but sure is interesting

Will be good next patch because str self buff is converted into str/con.

Thanes get access to medium shields, shields aren't bugged in RvR like parry, and you get slam.

I'd say yeah, it's well worth it.

A class that HAS access to slam, is considered a hybrid tank, shouldn't leave it alone imho.

Seems a good spec..
You have a nice self buff, with you're troll str will be nice when we get 1.61 when they remove caps.

You will also have a godd offansive attack,
As you can DD,DD slam, whip out 2-h ect..

I would say thane without shieldspec = gimp no1, cause there dam output is not even close to like warriors, so if you want a 2h weaponwielder, either do skald (pretty useless using shield without shieldspec, good to hit thru pbt with 1h thou) or warrior who still can have 50 weapon, 42 shield rest parry without affecting spec at all

That's what I have at the moment, but after the 1.58 changes I'm not so sure about it still being the best..

I wouldn't bother going 50 SC, as the self buff is kind of gimped (the average shaman has comparable or better), but 48 might actually be worth it...

In any case, I'll hold on to my /respec all a bit longer, since Thane respec was granted and respec stones won't be a common commodity I imagine...

My thane has 39weapon 42shield 20 parry 46sc, parry/block tons on pvm(allmost equal to warrior). Havent been on rvr with him so dont know about that part. As a race i wouldnt eaven consider a troll, simply because of too low dex. Dex affects to block/parry rate so you wouldnt parry and block as often as a norse/dwarf would. Since stat cap's will be removed troll would become a viable 2h thane(2h thanes suck imo). To me that self str/con buff is still more than useless and i wouldnt lower my defence just to get a better str/con. Shaman lvl 26 str/con is equal to thane str/con and allmost all shamans have 26+ aug(no more retard bots to mtk please) so you would need something like Mastery of the Arcane 4 or 5 to get cap stats from lvl 50 str/con wich thanes do not have.

50 sc is not worth it as the buff is still rubish imho all u need is 48 sc + seven u having a buffbot would mean all u need is 48

I would choose 50 SC above more parry because I make chars for RvR, and parry is shit in RvR, hence my choice being 50 SC.

dont go 48 SC, the 50 SC Spell is just the same as the 42? It gives the same statboost.

Thane str selfbuff gets converted into a str/con selfbuff.

42 Stormcalling: Thor's Fortification +42 Str/Con
50 Stormcalling: Thor's Potence +50 Str/Con

urm parry crap in rvr thats news to me sc 48 sheild 42 does great sword at 39 gives you nive styles after block and parry then rest into parry not meny infils can take down a thane and after next patch those that do now wont be able to then
as for 50 sc why you still get the 50 str buff/cons when we have it from 48+ sc items

My spec is

42 axe
42 sheild
48 SC

as a norseman with 134 dex, the str/con buff isn't worth it seeing as the shaman one is way better, and with the 48 spec you get the last DD, which is going to become useful next patch.

and of course slam, which all thanes need

Thanes are gimps with weapons anyway, those 3 points aint worth it

i got this spec, and like it very much... If i can slam a zerker he is dead, if not it's going to be close. last few warriors I duelled I owned them ( got SC armor though, and that helps alot ) getting a minimum of 42 in shield is quite important imo cuz slam is really good, also in rvr...

and why ( for the ppl above ) don't u spec in shield ??? a thane has parry and block ( shield use ) why stop using 1 of the defense methods ? if a thane had evade and parry yeah oke, but he doesn't... and i block alot...

Well as long as you go 42 sheild for slam (9 sec stun) and 46SC minimum (best DD) youll do OK. The rest put into weapon then whats left into parry.

Going 50 SC can be good after 1.60, but with so many buffbots and healer classes about, I doubt youll notice the difference.

Ok first off regards to stormcall, going from 48-50 SC gives you -8- points in str - I seriously doubt 99 spec points is worth 8 str. Now next patch it gets changes to str/con, but even then it seems dubious to me whether its worthwhile (and academic since I dont believe we get a respec). i.e. basically I wouldn't touch 50 SC with a barge pole - I'd rather have the extra 12 Parry.

Also in the next patch Thor's full lightning (the top end DD available at 48 SC, not 46 SC as incorrectly mentioned somewhere in this thread) is going to be recastable (like Mjollnir is currently) and it does good damage. (especially as you can drop in a shout-DD while you are casting).

Therefore I would say

1) get 48 SC for the last DD (46 is the last DMG add)
2) get 42 shield - Slam is invaluable and with end regen now its devastating in PvE or RvR
3) That leaves 39 weapon and the rest into parry (18 or so).

I would say that is the most balanced Thane template.

With a combination of the improvements to SC and the fact that Thanes arent really THAT bad anyway, used correctly Thanes will be more fun to play and more successful in RvR than they are now.

Best of all is that making the DD recastable means Thanes wont be forced to mjollnir when they want to keep casting and therefore that lessens the temptation to be a mezz breaker that Thanes are so famous for. (But hammers are SO pretty!!)

I heard rumours that they were going to drop the cast time on Mjollnir to 3 secs - now if they do that then we are really talking

As it stands now the 41 buff is the same as the 50. Because single stat buffs cap at 50. Double stat buffs cap at 75. So when we get the str/con we would have more str than before. So the 50 buff would give around 69 str/con (kinda gimped anyway since the last shaman and the champ buffs give 75). Also the 48 dd is worth having imo. My spec is 48 sc 42 shield 41 weapon. Ill get to respec at gorre when we get the patch to 50 sc to see if its worth it.

the last shaman buff is delved at 69 aswell. And if your not buffbotted, how often do you group with a 46 Aug shaman?

Since you will be weapon > 50 with item and RR bonusses at 50 easily aren't you just wasting about 10 points into parry here for no real gain in weapon?

Also depends if you want to play the game to be a standard play like everyone else class or just want to do your own thing...

I play a 2h dorf thane with no buffbot... Some would say I'm the ultimate gimp, but I still have fun...
