Temperature in case

Ive bought a new system case (nothing special) but it has a temperature probe that Ive placed against the side panel and is far enough away from the graphics card/cpu so its not touching. My question is what is a likely reading inside the average case?

Mines reading 32 oC and reaches 38 under load.

This seems a bit hot.

I wouldnt worry about it if I hadnt put the damn thing in...DOH

It seems hot? That's really quite low considering it's almost summer and it's getting warmer around here. My shuttle used to hit 48 degrees case temperature. Do you have any case fans? What graphics card and cpu are you using?

Anyway, there's no need to worry. It should work fine even if the case temperature was at 60 :)

My XP 2800 gets a case temp of about 30-32 under load.

Ofcourse its in a Full tower (chieftec) with an enermax PSU (dual fan thingy) and one fan sucking in air from the front :)

Catsby recommends you do not worry.
He says if you find yourself "worrying about heat" then cease at once. Catsby knows that heat can be a problem, but when it is, things start crashing lots.
Catsby points out that chips create heat, and this will warm up the surrounding, no matter how many fans are in place.

Catsby would be more worried if his computer was at room temperature (meaning it had broken and wasn't working!) or if it were colder than ambient in the absence of an active cooling solutionl.

Ive got an XP3200+, water cooled but Ive put the radiator inside trhe case (cooled by intake fans). This limits the cooling of the cpu to case temperature and obviously Ive lost the differential of having it outside the case.
The graphics card is 5950 ultra which has a hefty heat sink on it and gets very hot under load that doesnt help the situation.

I have two extractor fans at the rear and Ive modded the side panel to add an additional side extractor fan next to the graphics card. I too have an Enermax PSU with its extraction on top.

I think this is a case of too much information just giving me something new to worry about.

I did have some instability yesterday but thats when I had just built the system into this new case so that could be teething probs, loose cards etc, though the temp was getting quite high (42 oC when that happened)

20oC here, but if you can't smell smoke it's OK :)

More important is the CPU temp, not sure what it should be for your processor, Athlons do run very hot though. Might be worth checking if you can.

my case is around 20 and my cpu high 30s, and low 40s under high load

My case is usually around 35 and my CPU between 45 and 55.

Just a quick hijack, should the CPU fan be blowing onto the processor or away from it?

Currently I have it blowing down.. but is that just blowing the heat back down onto the processor? Should it be blowing away from it?,

down is good, up is bad...

try this, put your hand on one side of a fan, then the other, you caan feel it blow, but not suck

I had a BSOD out of nowhere this evening, after reboot a quick temp check showed CPU at 62 (just running WinAMP...) and case at 47. It's an Athy 1.4, which I believe is one of the hottest chips ever made if memory serves.

Anyway, looks like the case is off for the summer.

Well it ran okay all day yesterday. I reopositioned the heat sensor and its reading slightly lower but I think its more accuraterly recording the case temp now. I think it was too close to the graphics card.

The extra side fan has knocked the temp down by a good 5-8 oC so I must have placed it right.

mines pretty much silent, and overclocked, and cool

everythings temp controled from the CPU to the gfx card to the PSU

the only thing that isn't is my homemade caes fan

Are you going to explain how or use this thread to brag about how big your internet willy is?

My old Athlon ran fine at anything under 68 degrees.
At 71 it began smoking, and at 73 it caused a reboot.

Could fry sausages on the heatsink :)

little bit of both

CPU Fan:
the mobo sorts the speed control out on this, it's in the bios (asus a7n8x deluxe v2)

PSU Fan:
came like this, also has a swanky 3 pin fan job on, so i can monitor the fans speed

GFX Fan:
asus 9600XT, this can be turned of with this little app that came with the card

<edit> we're not going to have anyone dispensing advice regarding opening up PSUs, ta. - Xav</edit>

And you get high 30 cpu temperature? What are you using? A PII 300? :)

That's 6 times mine, AND it glows. Unfair.

Oh, had an alltime high case temp of 50 degrees today, nerf hot weather. Still, PC running fine as always. On the subject, that was.

Ignoring wyrd fish and his 'cracking open a PSU' lunacy - I'd suggest that anyone who wants to add an 80mm chassic fan acquires a regular 3-pin fan from the likes of Overclockers.co.uk here or if you're worried about acoustics then maybe an Acoustifan from QuietPC.com and connects it to their chassis fan socket on their mobo. Most 80mm fans come fitted with a 3-wire 3-pin plug which allows the motherboard to sense their speeds and adjust voltage/rpm accordingly.

Incidentally, even if you WERE desperate for a fan and trawling around your old kit to salvage something, I'd suggest avoiding fan from an old PSU at all costs - aside from the risk of a pretty nasty electrical shock, PSU fans are generally pretty worn out after about 18 months use - hardly something you'd want in your PC...

there a massive pile of old PSUs at school, so i pilverd as many fans as i could and hooked them up to a 12V supply to find the quietest

Hardly something everyone can do, and still neither safe nor sensible.

Ok, feel free to mess with the guts of PSUs, lick their components and stick kettle leads up your arse, whatever floats your boat, but I'm saying for the last time we don't want it discussed here.
