Going to say no, as you didn't give us the moving speed/weight of the rhino or the amount of silk.

Sadly I have been forbidden to export the smallest Rhino variant from Sumatra on grounds of it being an endangered species :(

however, some googling has revealed the following: the Sumatra Rhino weighs 600 - 950 kg. Rhinos can sprint at over 30 mph. Silk is the strongest of all the natural fibers, but it has moderate to poor elasticity. I haven't been able to find it's breaking strain. The sheet is a normal sheet. like a bed sheet :)

I'm sure some bright spark will be able to work out the physics :)

Could of sworn I heard an advert for dwarfcasino.com, infact I stopped the sex to look at the telly. After further investigation today there is no such thing :(

Easily: rhino horn pops the sheet which ends up torn to shreds when the ickle rhino runs through.

I think the rhino would think it was some kind of barrier and not attempt to run through it...

They are quite bright don't you know

Indeed. I'm with Dray on this.

Regardless of weight, the little rhino will have a hardened horn (much like myself) which will easily penetrate a silk sheet of expert craftsmanship.

You can use your hardened horn to penetrate a silk sheet? And you don't have a job in pr0n?

Of course yes. When rhinos run, they run with their head held down a little, leaving their sharp tusk pointing forwards. This will rip the silk, and he will progress through the other side.

Well considering in days of oldé silk saved countless lives by peventing arows from penetrating any further as well as bloking the injury, I don't think it would.

It would also depend on the thickness of the silk and how tightly the silk sheet is fastened to whatever its tied to...if its indeed tied to anything.

If the silk sheet is allowed to go with the mini rhino then it wont penetrate the soft white silk...

Clever comment - some TV I watched last night showed animals being herded into trucks in Africa using plastic sheets to control them - I guess it would probably have given way if they had all charged it but "oh look, a barrier" would get my vote - the rhino wouldn't try! Muahahahahahahaaaaaa...

Oh no. Clear silk, or dyed, or what? Would a rhino recognise silk?! DAMN YOU!

bah you naysayers :p let's have a willing rhino for this experiment eh? the sheet is a normal weight, normal size silk sheet like you'd put on your bed. it's not bullet or fireproof and is stretched between two rhino-proof posts.

What speed is the rhino runnning at? What rhino is it, a black or white rhino? How heavy is the rhino? How big is its tusk? Is it male of female? Is it healthy? ;)

Well if thats the case then like I said before thr Rhino would probably not charge it as its a barrier.

Unless of course it nuzzled the silk first and found it to be nice and soft it would then probably just trample through it but then its not running so it wouldnt count.

Some random guesswork using tdc's figures:
Assuming the rhino comes to a complete halt (so Dv = 30mph = 13.4 m/s - jesus that's a fast rhino) and assuming the silk 'stretches' upon impact for 1/10th of a second (so Dt = 0.1), the total force exerted by the heaviest available rhino would be 950 * 13.4 / 0.1 = 127300 N. If we assume that this force is applied via the rhino's horn, evenly exerted over an area of say 1 square centimeter, that would equal a pressure of 127300 / 10^-4 = 1.273 * 10^9 Pa = 1273 MPa.
I haven't been able to find out much about silkworm silk, but the 'ultimate strength' of spider silk given on wikipedia is 1200 MPa, so in this example the force exerted by the rhino might be just about enough to break the material.

Actually I'm applying all this stuff incredibly crudely and it's probably very wrong in many ways but oh well - I'm maths, not physics. At least the numbers came out nicely close.

don't worry Louster, I have complete faith in your abilities!

see here ladies, a brilliant mathematician has checked over the rhino thing, and even if the sheet was made of spider silk, which is quite strong, the rhino would go through it like a hot knife through butter :p

my words are backed by SCIENCE!!11

I was thinking about what colour the rhino would have to be to achieve optimal penetration I decided puce would be best!

Nope, we all know Red makes things look like it's moving faster. Therefore it would be a red rhino!

It would also have certain modifications, so its horn would now be pneumatic drill.

What's the thread count?`Are we talking Walmart "silk" sheets or Uppity High Class Super Sheets?

Also when will the rollator airplane runway be taken into account?

well, around the internet the silk peoples tend to talk about momme weight, with the base being 12. so our sheet will come from a 12 weight cloth bale.

the rhino will *NOT* be accelerated or hindered by any artificial means, ie it will move under it's own power on a flat surface.

god you people are picky

So the Rhino won't take off because it's not on a conveyor belt?

Details are everything, these days. Skimping out on the major ones is a big mistake :(

Also, are you talking about CURRENT Rhinos? Or Rhinos in the year 4000? The ones that are adamantium plated with extra pointy? (Even though we know the original answer, we need to think about expandability and future changes!)
