right lads and lasses, I'd be very obliged if you could help me out with an excel formula that counts the number of times certain words occur in a range of cells and outputs that number into a designated cell.

example:

teamA
teamA
teamB

A=2
B=1

countif(b2..b5,"teamb")

shoud give you what you want

kanonfodda speaks the truth... just put this formula in the cell you want the total in :

=countif(A1:A8000,"teamA")

That'll tell ya how many times teamA is in the range of column A, 1 to 8000... you can use wildcards too like *

Surprisingly enough, a search for 'chocolate starfish' brought more Limp Bizkit than anything else... no pr0n in the first 30 results either !!
