hehe, you would not believe the trouble I had taking that photo, so don't chastise me for looking like a startled rabbit :D (you, on the otherhand, fatbusinessman, look very swarve). As for the site, I can only ask that everyone be patient whilst we do get up and running, especially on the content side of things, since we hadn't quite intended to go live so early.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. There is an RDF feed coming, gremlin :)

Seems to me like thats exactly why the banner is there. You want ad revenue, and you're living in years gone by. No-one takes notice of, or views, banners, so why break what essentially could be a fluid design just because you can? The resolution excuse is just sloppy.

FatBusinessman - hehe :)

Deadmanwalking, D0LLySh33p - Thanks :)

Kez - My apologies, I though you were talking about the column entries themselves. As you highlight, those

elements should be <div>, but validators tend to ignore such things, since they're not technically errors, just not recommended practice. Nevertheless they will be changed, so thank you.

As for the banner, it seems I will not be able to convince you that the design woud be 1024x768 based regardless of whether we needed to eventually run adverts. In fact the banner is all the more unobtrusive because it is so well integrated, rather than being stuck on as an after thought, as is often the case. As already said, a 'fluid' stylesheet is in production, but this alone is far more than many hardware sites that already use 1024x678 resolution provide (of which there are a great many).

If you're prejudiced against banner adverts or not 'fluid' designs, then so be it, that's your choice, but I can assure you that your concerns have already been registered and that the hostile tone of your posts unnecessary. We're all friends here :)

Kind Regards

Maybe we can get the Hardware forum skinned to match the web site there? (sorry if it has been brought up already :p)

Hi Clowneh!

It has been brought up privately, but not on the forums, to my knowledge. The plan is basically to wait until vBulletin 3 goes final and the BarrysWorld/GAME.net forums are updated. We're waiting only because vB2 skins probably won't be fully compatible with vB3, and because our energies are needed elsewhere right now :) But rest assured, there should be a nice blue and cream skin for you soon.

Take care

Edit ~ Providing, of course, The Establishment are happy to permit the alternate skin :)

Well, I don't see why they shouldn't considering that, strictly speaking, the green skin we all know and love is an "alternate" skin :)

I'm still failing to see why you chose a fixed width to begin with when its the kind of design that lends itself perfectly to a fluidity.

So most of your users use 1024x768, and other sites use that as their design resolution, too? Those are perhaps the worst thought out reasons in existence. Sorry, but there it is. Whether other sites do similar or not should be of no consequence (indeed, it is), and users that use 1024x768 - a large portion of them will not run full screen, so they'll have the ('minor') inconvience of it all. On top of this, the users with higher resolutions will have a site much smaller than their window, for no good reason.

Given there's a fluid sheet in production, I won't harp on about it any further. It just kind of baffles me.

And yes, I am prejudice against banners, as you should be too. They don't work, its that simple. Even the argument for brand awareness through banner adverts is fast disappearing.

(Oh, and for the record, validators don't tend to ignore such things - the W3C validator, for one, noticed the error)

And that's me done.

Since you asked, it will be done :) There are quite a few changes going to be made to the site, so it'll happen when all of them are finished :D

Stay tuned!

haha, no, but thanks ;)

actually, it's funny you should mention that, on the flight over to IDF on sunday I watched Click|Online for the first time and spotted a friend being interviewed on there... hardware journalism is a very small world indeed, so it seems :)

Look forward to more content. Looks like an easily navigable site.
But please change the colour scheme, it drys my eyes out.
