So, to Kenny's delight, I have finally found a FPS that I actually enjoy. Do any of you guys play this? I'm deeply rubbish at it (had my own healer guy following me at one stage until he realised that I was going round in circles, lost, at which point he swiftly abandoned me to the elements) and I keep trying to set fire to people on my own side because I'm convinced they are all spies, and honestly I have very little clue what I'm doing, but these are just tiny details :)

Kenny's just pleased that we finally have a game we can share. Usually our pooter time involves me tearing out my own eyes with boredom as he plays Resident Evil through for the nineteenth time, or him trying very hard to look impressed when I roll a really big ball in Katamari. I think he has this mental vision of us becoming a die hard husband and wife team, going into battle together, killing spree style, and then twisting round in our computer chairs and high fiving when surrounded by dead bodies.

Reality is him diving into battle, me shouting "Hey, why am I holding a sandwich?" and then running off in the opposite direction while trying to remember what the crouch button is.

If any of you guys play we should try to meet up in game, and set fire to each other. By this, I mean, you set fire to me, while I frantically press the jump button in a vague attempt at escape, and then get confused about which way I'm meant to be attacking and run into my own base feeling triumphant.

Yay?

I got it and played for a while, but as with me and most games the novelty wore off.... I must say though, your 'tactics' sound an awful lot like mine ;)

I've started playing it again now I have an internet connection that doesn't only give decent pings at 4am :)

I've been running around burning people recently which is good fun, but I'm incredibly shit at being a sniper.

Here's my steam page, I believe Utini plays it, but he cheats ;)

I play it now and then, my clan plays it alot and I join in when I can. I am ok at it, I have specialised as a Demo and have got quite good at using him. Look on Youtube for class tips, they are very helpful. Start off choosing one class and getting good at it then move on to another one.

Medic is a good first choice as they are always useful and you get points for healing people and you can see most of the map whilst healing behind people like heavies and soldiers.

TF2 is fun in short bursts but Left 4 Dead is better. It's much more fun working as a group of 4 and berating the people you are clawing to death over voice comms :)

As poag says though, use the FH steam group.

I've got it, tried it for a little but just couldn't get into it. Anyone got a linky to a concise and interesting n00b guide I could thumb through. Maybe it was lack of persistence? :)

Yeah, a noob guide would be handy. I don't have a clue what I'm doing as a spy, or how someone always seems to see through my spyness, and I don't understand how you get given extra weapons sometimes.

First things first, is your computer plugged in? :D Job as a spy is stabbing people in the back lots! and sapping sentrys if your team is having difficulty getting passed one, a little coordination here with your team members works wonders so when you sap your team knows to move in and blow the crap out of it! As sometimes after sappage you end up dead and the engineer de-saps making the whole thing pointless :( Take the shortest route to behind enemy lines, stealthed, and avoid all enemy team players as if they hit you with anything or touch you they will spot you. If you're having difficulty going the shortest, the longer one is usually less travelled but causes other issues such as not being able to remained stealthed before getting behind enemy lines. Anyway once you are there, start stabbing people in the back! I like pretending to be a sniper and having a little lookse at my base as if I'm trying to shoot someone, usually works well and you get in a good position for backstabs. Another useful strategy can be finding a good hiding spot far enough away from an enemy building(sg, teleporter, dispenser, etc) that you don't get spotted/shot at but can shoot it yourself(if the area is busy it works nicely)

speaking as a mainly pyro player -> LOOK NATURAL
if i come round a corner, thre are 3 of my team mates there all looking at me, and one runs off suddenly, ill chase him.
behave like you belong and you will often get away with it

You can just mute voice comms in the options, yaka :).

Back in the days when friendly fire was enabled, spies were absolutely deadly. You'd have to be reallllly careful who you tried to kill on your side. Now that there's 0 FF, pyros will just flame everyone they pass (at least I do) just to check. If they catch fire - they're a spy.

You do need to be a bit of an actor as a spy, you can't look out of place. If you're wondering around their base, be careful what class you choose. Medics don't tend to stay back so you'd look very suspect if you choose one of them. Also if you choose an engineer, it's entirely possible you'll run in to the engineer you're copying, that's a dead give away (if they look at you it says the name of the guy you're copying). I've seen an engineer coming towards my sentry several times only to see that it says he's called "nafe" - he'll get a wrench right in the face.

Also, try and cloak at the last possible second so you don't waste it. Don't be disguised before you cloak or if someone spots you they'll know to look for a spy of that class.

Also, if you do get someone shooting you (not a pyro) and they haven't actually caught you do anything, play it cool. If you run, they'll kill you. If you stop and look at them, they'll kill you. If you completely ignore them you *might* survive. I managed to sap some sentry guns out of sight and run off - some engineer came out of the resupply room and saw me running, assumed it was me and chased me shooting. I got down to about 20 health but paid no attention to him and just stopped at a good sniping spot looking towards my base (I was as a sniper). He gave up :D.

The spy can be great fun or absolutely bloody infuriating - might be worth going for another class if you're new to TF2. Medic is probably the most straight forward class - just find a heavy or a pyro and heal like mad. When you get übercharged, right click to use it for about 5 seconds of invulnerability. Just use it at the right time :).

I really like the option to auto hold on the heal gun too, holding it gets so annoying after a while. Especially if the guy keeps going round tight corners.

I think Engineer, Heavy, Medic are good starter classes. They give you a bit more time to run about and see what it is everyones doing :D and you don't have to be a great aim to play them.

Dunno about engineer - last few times I've played that I've gotten really very frustrated at spies sapping the shit out of my stuff before I get to kill them. Yet when I try to do the same it takes barely anything to kill me :\.

Two more tips for playing the spy are firstly, remember the 'B' key - it will auto cloak you to your last cloaked class (saves loads of time). Secondly, when you are stealthed and moving behind enemy lines look at out for the ammo boxes that spawn around the map, when you stand on one when stealthed it will often re-fill your stealth meter to the max allowing you to effectively move a much greater distance.

There was a patch a few weeks ago that has made everyone start playing spies recently (as you can probably see by a lot of your team being them) which in turn has lead to most classes just spamming fire on each other in search for a spy (especially pyros - stay away from them at all costs).

Sapping a good player's sentry gun is quite difficult, make sure you sap the gun (as it won't fire at you) and then look for the backstab or pull out your gun and attempt to kill the engineer. It takes quite a bit of practice and is hard, especially when the engineer knows you're about, but it really is a game winner.

Oh final tip, i'm sure you'll probably work this out quickly - you can't stab people when stealthed so make sure to decloak before you go stabby stabby.
