Hi all - I know quite a few peeps here have tattoos/piercings, so I'm posting this from another forum to see what you folks reckon:

Don't know if anyone can help me but I got my first tattoo on Wednesday 16th and I am really worried, it is a self design about 4-5 inches in length and width on my inner forearm, I designed it myself but I'm worried about looking after it during the healing process. The tattoo artist told me to use a thin layer of Savlon and then a very thin layer of Vaseline over it to stop it from scabbing up but some websites say not to use Vaseline. I went back to him yesterday and asked but he said because it was quite a large tattoo to use the Vaseline on top of the savlon for about a week to help prevent scabs. Any tips out there

Ta :)

I used bachs rescue cream, as recommended by my artist, but to be honest, Aquaeous Cream from the chemist is far cheaper, and works just as well.

Every artist has their own recommended brew for preventing scabbing, but nothing will actually stop it. The stick is to let it heal naturally, and to not let the scab crack. If it does, you'll be left with white lines or patches.

I just used Vaseline and some Vaseline cream (recommended by my artist) on the two I got, they both turned out fine, including the self design one. :)

I used aquaeous cream on mine, best to go with the advise of the tatoo artist though I suppose. Your trusting them to stick a needle in you, you should trust them to tell you how to look after it.

A mate has 9 tats, used Preperation H on all of them and they all look spot on. Shame he is a daft bastard and had them done in the first place though :p

Whats with fat birds having tattoos on the backs of their shoulders, or just above their breast?

Looks stupid, and they still look fat.

I've always used E45, although i've known a few people to use preperation H as it stops the itching.. I'd be wary of anything to oily though as it needs to be moisturised, not smothered....

I just used the tub of cream I got from the tattooist's and it worked ok. No scabbing or any problems at all.
