Taking up guitar?

Is it possible for me to start playing the guitar again, using books / internet as my only teaching methods?

I went to a 'performing arts' school so i was quite well trained in music and was taught, at one point, to play guitar, keyboard, bass in that order. I could also read music, but i have kinda forgoten alot of that too. That was nearly 10 years ago.... god im old!

Anyhow.. back on track.

Basicaly im looking to take up music again, i enjoyed play alot, and found it very calming. Would guitar be a good starting point, bearing in mind i can remember next to nothing for it. Wheres a good place to get a guitar, acoustic ofc, till i get good or decide its worth an upgrade. Anyone know of any good sites / books that teach you how to play?

Or should i just take something else up? Or save the cash and spend the £100-200 on something useful?

dude ofcourse yu can, hell i brought myself a banjo after no musical xp at all and a dvd from ebay, theres a banjo forum (well its for all different kinds of string instruments) if you practice and stuff you can do it, sounds like you wont need much help tbh.

if you dont get someone who knows what they are doing to show you how to play properly (as in the technique) you can hurt yourself if you play regularly

why is that exactly? i want to teach my self the acoustic over the summer but cant afford a trainer :\

example if you dont warm up properly you could strain your tendons or some shit

Played for about 25 years now, taught guitar for 15 of those...

I'd recommend getting some lessons, too, make sure your teacher gives you proper warm-up exercises (so vital to avoid tendon/muscle pains or problems) and instills good physical habits, e.g. left-hand position and picking-hand motion etc. The first thing I gave any new pupil of mine was a set of warm-up exercises, that also helped greatly to build up co-ordination and finger independence over time.

I've not had one lesson on guitar and just used tabs / chord pictures to learn, im not some guy who holds the guitar at the bottom and gives it all this wig wam bam, but i can put enough rhythm/fills together to get gigs with it.

Just buy a chord book for starters. Just your basic chords. a-b-c-d-e-f-g then when you perfect them perhaps try and learn the minors of
the chords etc etc.
